Early settlers of this area were mainly Scotch-Irish and there are several dominant family names that still populate these areas. Tobacco was grown in the area for many years, but now is rarely seen. This whole valley between two mountain ranges was chosen in the 1970's to be dammed and made into a reservoir for a hydroelectric power plant; however, the residents at the time formed a strong resistance, went to Washington, and eventually blocked the development, preserving its natural beauty. This land is within the Jefferson National Forest. It was owned for many years by Roy Light, owner of a nearby lumber mill, but when he passed away, his children cleared the timber and moved away. Since then, the diverse deciduous forest has regrown quickly. A rustic cabin made from salvaged hand-hewn logs was built on the site in 2014 and an alpaca farm was established; however, the owners had to move away due to employment changes. Currently, we are working on developing a perennial food forest, as well as dairy goats, and chickens.

The roadfront side of our property offers level terrain for pull-behind trailers, while vehicles (preferably 4WD) and tent campers can travel all the way back to the creek. Feeling froggy? Ford the stream and camp in the large field on the other side. Be sure to mind the animals and fields, as this is a working farm. One mile down the road from the farm is the Virginia Creeper Trail, renowned for biking, but as a multi-use trail, you can also enjoy walking, running, horseback riding, fishing, cross country skiing, and geocaching. South Holston Lake is only minutes away by vehicle, with two public access boating ramps 10 to 20 minutes away. For a drink by the water, head to Abingdon Vineyards- only 10 minutes away. Access to the Appalachian Trail is only 20 minutes away in Damascus. We became caretakers of this lovely property in June of 2021, moving from our existing farm, 45 minutes away. Strategic Location for peaceful camping with lots of nearby options. Camping is very primitive and rustic as new amenities come online in planned future. The best time of booking is the weekend at present. We have: Wooded/Grassy hills with plenty of tree cover and open space to spread out . A uniquely positioned community fire pit is available with an impressive view. It is very rustic and primitive, but well kept, quiet, secluded, with developing surroundings. There is direct access to Jefferson National Forest and miles of hiking, biking and horseback trails. Equestrians encouraged, but is Bring your own horse and Tie Line. Nearby sites include Bark Camp Lake, Guest River Gorge, Bear Rock, Little Stony Falls, Chief Benge Trail, Devils Bath Tub, and High Knob. We are also located along several driving and scenic routes to include: Backroads of the Cumberland's, Appalachian Backroads, Virginia Wildlife and Birding Trail, and Thomas Jefferson Scenic Byway (Rt. 72). In addition, within a short drive there is an ATV trailhead in the local town. The Clinch River is not far at all as well. There is a small quaint downtown less than 5 miles with grocery, gas, supplies, and a few places to eat. Mission: The original idea for CR Adventure Outpost came many years ago. We grew up visiting "Grandma & Grandpa" in Wise County and developed a deep love for the area, the outdoors, and all it had to offer. There came a point, , when we realized that the amount of outdoor activities and authentic cultural experiences could indeed support visitors. It could also support many business opportunities once everyone became aware of what was all around them. At that point, a process began of research and planning on ideas some thought were pointless. People deeply want to get back to nature and withdrawal from a fast paced materialistic society, at least long enough to realize what is really important in life. There is a huge need and vast opportunity to take advantage of the many beautiful landscapes in Southwest Virginia.

Deer, Racoons, Opossums, Bobcats, Bear, Fox, Groundhogs, and Turkey have been spotted on the property. We are a great spot for bird watching as well! Camp Grassland: Two of our prepped campsites are on a flattened area of the hillside field with access to a fire pit, log bench, and porta-potty. This location is in direct sun with beautiful views and easy access from the road. Parking at the top of the field is recommended unless you have a 4WD vehicle. Farmhouse Holler: 2nd Campsite is located next to our old farmhouse on a lower section of the property. Its near the natural spring and is shaded. There are no convenient bathroom facilities at this location so it is recommended to bring your own. Reaching the porta-potty would require an extensive uphill hike or driving around to the other entrance. To reach this campsite, the driveway could be considered rough terrain so drive slowly. Lowered vehicles or those with little ground clearance are not recommended. Each campsite has a max occupancy of 2 people. If you need space for more campers, please reach out to us about how many are in your party. We can host groups with advanced notification. Overlanding vehicles are welcome. Attractions: If you are looking for birds-eye view of the area, visit the Mendota Fire Tower only 3.2 mile away. You can see it from the farm and see the farm from it. It's about a 15 minute hike from the road. You can choose the mildly challenging way up or take the old roadway for a smoother walk. Clinch River is only 20 minutes away. Cool off in the river or enjoy kayaking and tubing opportunities from Clinch River Adventures. Closest convenience store is about 15 minutes away. Closest Grocery store is about 20 minutes away. Friendly-leashed pets are welcome on the property. Remember to always keep your pet tethered as we have free roaming animals on the property. Never leave pets unattended on the property. When we relocated from Florida, we really wanted that vacation feel of a place to call our home. We found this cabin nestled in the background and absolutely fell in love with it! Gorgeous mountain views, a breath of fresh air, and minimal noise all around. There is a natural spring across from us that used to provide our cabin with water, and the neighbors all around have worked together to keep the area as clean and peaceful as possible for everyone! We have spent a year remodeling our cabin and starting our new country life. Come join us and see for yourself!Learn more about this land:Join us at what we call our little slice of Heaven! Our property will definitely make you feel relaxed and at one with nature and the great outdoors, but rest assured we have close access to shopping and restaurants all within a quick 10-20 minute drive depending on where you need to go. We have plenty of wildlife for you to enjoy both during the day and at night. If you'd like to take a walk down our dirt roads, you are more than welcome to enjoy our little creek and the local animals that come to visit. If you are looking to hike, we have several places nearby we recommend! There are a few parks within approximately a 30 minute drive of us. Some of our favorites to visit are Natural Tunnel, Devil's Bathtub, Laurel Run, Bays Mountain, and Blue Hole. Only 1.5 hours away from the Pigeon Forge/Gaitlinburg area! We are located about 2 hours from Knoxville airport, and only 20 minutes from Bristol airport. We are located off of 2 private drives with only 4 houses off both roads! While a 4x4 vehicle is not required to get up our driveway, please use caution when coming up our gravel road as there are rocks and dips along the way. We have limited parking in our driveway, so please be mindful of other guests arriving and leaving. There is a communal fire ring and charcoal grill available for use, but please bring your own supplies. Feel free to set up your tent anywhere in the front or side yard! We are currently staying in the cabin on the property as we are remodeling the inside at this time. Our cabin is not available for rent at this time, but all guests are welcome to use the downstairs commodities. We live very conservatively, so we may not have many amenities, but you will feel very welcome and at peace at our property. Please do not feed or handle any of our animals without asking us beforehand. At any given time, we have 2 dogs, 4 cats, and a flock of chickens roaming around the property. While all of our animal family is more than spoiled and usually looking for extra treats from newcomers, please use caution around our roosters! They're job is to protect our property, and if you're in need of a morning wake up call, have no worries as the boys will undoubtedly provide you with the songs of their people.
