Hike through spectacular gorges and deep canyons when camping near Haines.
There are no campgrounds within the small town of Haines, but the surrounding areas feature plenty of options for every type of camper. Drive 30 minutes west to Umatilla National Forest and find a private cabin rental with a kitchen and modern bathroom, or stay at a local campground with amenities like picnic tables, flush toilets, drinking water, and corrals for equestrian campers. While here, hike to waterfalls and panoramic lookouts in the Columbia River Gorge area, fish and float downstream on the Umatilla River, and head to the Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort to cruise groomers, cross-country ski, and snowmobile in winter. Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, roughly an hour east, offers a different view from deep canyons that surround Snake River. Walk the Hells Canyon Rim Trail for an up-close look, then stay at a rustic guard station with a private porch and mountain views or a campground that welcomes tents and RVs. Amenities like potable water, vault toilets, and picnic tables are available.
