This is the original site that started Camp Escape. It boasts of a private dock, water raft, and 5000 acres of woods at your back. Camp out in isolation for the best star gazing and camp fire stories. Voted best in Wisconsin and top 10 in the US 2020!

Deep in the backwoods of rural Wisconsin, Camp Escape is an excellent spot to disconnect with the 21st century and get completely off grid. At this camp, a handful of secluded sites each come with spectacular lakeside views and shelter from pine trees for complete isolation.

Here’s a chance to test your wilderness skills. There’s 70 acres of private forest and four kettle lakes at your disposal, so getting to know your surroundings must be top of the list. You can potter around on the water in rowing boats and canoes (both free for campers to use) and fish for bass to grill over your campfire. Kids can safely run off energy, make new friends at the play areas, or go scavenging for raspberries in season.

Beyond camp, there’s a whole wilderness of 5,000 acres just begging to be explored; take a backpack and hike or horseback ride into the forest, or rent an ATV or snowmobile for winter adventures in the hills. At the end of the day, though, there’s probably nothing better than sitting on a wooden dock overlooking a lake and contemplating the wilderness as the sun sets.

No-fuss amenities at this back-to-nature campground include fire rings, wooden tables, and parking by each site. Gas cylinders are available, but there’s no drinking water so you'll need to bring your own. There’s one compostable toilet on the park as well as plenty of dirt (and trees to hide behind) for catholes.

This is our third year at Camp Escape (The Woods) and once again we loved our time there! The dogs loved swimming and exploring the woods, we loved paddle boarding and our time together. We enjoy the environment created and Tara was kind and generous as always!

We loved it so much. It was our first family camping trip, all 4 kids LOVED it and had a blast. We swam, we kayaked, we walked. It was a beautiful time. The tent sites aren’t flat which is a little challenging but overall the experience was fabulous

The campsite was perfect as it sat on a lake with no campsites near by. The site itself was a bit hilly however, it was perfect for the 5 tents we had! Make sure to try some of Tara's fresh eggs!

"The Woods" is a great location. So beautiful to have water on three sides. Wooded primitive camping; so quiet and peaceful. The location is mostly sloped toward the water so finding a perfectly flat location for a tent is not in your future. We were still able to find flat enough locations to enjoy a 6p and 3p tent location. Providing you can handle no electric, running water, or bathroom, then this location is fantastic. Tara is super friendly and responds quickly to requests and inquiries. Took advantage of the fresh eggs and firewood.

I was at "The Woods" camp site, which is the one by the lake. Overall I had a decent stay but there're a few things that would make me hesitate to recommend it.

The pro's:
- Right next to the lake with a nice view
- A couple of tables, plenty of chairs, and a grilling iron for convenience
- Merrill is a decent sized city within an easy 10 minute drive, so anything that might be needed for resupply, as well as fast food options, bars and restaurants, etc.
- The main road that leads to the camp site is virtually always empty, so it's nice and quiet

The con's
- The entire site is a downward sloping hill with basically no completely flat spaces to speak of. I managed to find one with minimal slope and aligned the tent accordingly. At night everything would gradually slide down and I had to fix it when I woke up in the morning. Same thing for sitting around the campfire - the chair is either slightly leaning forward or back (or to the side, I suppose). Not a deal breaker but not ideal.
- The area where to leave the car uphill is also where one would go for bathroom duties. The people staying there before me definitely did as I found plenty of toilet paper strewn around. I can understand why the hosts would not want to clean that up, but still.
- The lake looks very nice, but it's a standing lake with a lot of underwater fauna covering the entire floor. I can't swim where I feel like the underwater growth is "grabbing" me, it freaks me out, so I ended up not swimming.

Private secluded campsite next to Lake. I stayed with my 13 year old daughter, she loved fishing from the dock and exploring. Additional sites can be heard across the lake but had no issue during quiet hours. Tara was very helpful with anu questions or items that she could provide. Walmart a short drive for anything that was forgotten.
