Once a working farm and on its way back to productivity, Providence Crossroads Farm is nestled in the hills of western Berkeley County, West Virginia.  A recent purchase, two families are expanding farm operations, raising chickens, adding livestock, and reclaiming fallow fields.  We're currently offering two campsites: the Hemlock Camp sits under one of the only hemlock trees on the property, and is next to a stream; while Whitetail Ridge Camp sits atop a ridge on the northeastern edge of the property and is surrounded by oaks and other mature trees. The land passed through three generations before being purchased by the current owners.  Wildlife, natural flora, and the denizens in and around the ponds create a healthy and vibrant ecosystem that holds many surprises under the next leaf, or just a few steps down the trail.

Hemlock Camp on the stream bank
The land was beautiful, the hosts were friendly and helpful. We were looking for quiet snd isolation and I was a bit worried when other campers drove up but we didn’t hear anything from them at all. Lots of wild bunnies and farm animals. You will hear roosters- one has a crow like a soprano warming up. No stream at the time but still pretty. Hosts are still in the process of marking the trails. Our site didn’t have a lot of room for a tent- perfect for our four person backpacking tent, but bigger could be difficult. Firewood was damp but hosts were happy to provide dry when asked.

Ridgetop Camp Among the Oaks
Peaceful ridgetop site
As the first camper to use this location, I will try to provide relevant details as a guide. We were looking for a site in the vicinity of Sleepy Creek WMA and this listing looked like the right combination of amenities and location. Check-in was easy. We were greeted by Lorree the host upon arrival and we made preparations to head up to our site. At the pavilion area where parking is located, there are 3 portable toilets and a spigot for potable water. We filled our water bottles and CNOC bags from the spigot then grabbed our gear to head up to the site. Lorree led us up to the site to make sure that we found the right spot and to make sure we got settled in comfortably. From parking it is about a 10 minute walk uphill to the ridge where the campsite is located so don’t bring more gear than what you’re willing to carry. My wife and I had everything we needed split between our backpacks so we didn’t need to make a return trip back down the hill. At the site there are 2 small wooden tables fashioned out of logs and a stone fire ring with a metal cooking grate, as well as a pile of firewood for your use. At the time of our visit there was an abundance of downed limbs and twigs for use in starting and maintaining a campfire. My wife set up our tent, a 3-person Big Agnes backpacking tent, and I got the fire started. Since there is no bear pole or bin on site we lofted our food bag up into one of the trees using a PCT-style hang. I don’t think bears are known to frequent the property but you can’t rule them out, either, especially if they are hungry. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet up on the ridge. In the morning we relaxed with coffee and breakfast before packing up. Keep in mind that you will be packing your trash out with you so bring a suitable bag or container for that. Also remember that there is a 10 minute walk downhill to the portable toilets so keep that “commute time” in mind as well. We were both pleased with our stay and it’s likely that we’ll be back the next time we need a campsite in this area.
