We were recently featured in the Austin American Statesman - search for "Seeking Solitude, and celebrating a milestone, in West Texas"

Located 19 miles from Study Butte/Terlingua, 3 miles off the Hwy 118, and 65 miles south of Alpine, Tierra del Sol Basecamp sets the spectacular far west Texas stars with a beautiful southern view of the Bofecillos Mountains, (Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria). From Study Butte, it’s just another 3 miles into the entrance to Big Bend National Park where you can hike, bike, fish, kayak, go off-roading and even take a day trip into Mexico, with a passport. Near Tierra del Sol, aside from the National Park, you can find the Big Bend Ranch State Park and the Terlingua Ghost Town, along with many of the outfitters to get you on the river our deep into 4x4 country. There are 5 primitive campsites assigned.  A hillside overlooking the 2 mile wide basin at the foot of the Bofecillos or down amongst the wildlife in the Triangle Basin. This is as primitive as primitive gets. There is no water available onsite. There is a composting outhouse onsite.

Food and supplies can be purchased at the Cottonwood Grocery Store in Study Butte, 20 miles south on Hwy 118.

Camping gear can be rented from Far Flung Outdoor Center in Terlingua.

Remote but still close to the park. Site six is the bomb.

The landscape is fabulous and the host is quite gracious. He allowed us to take rocks from the area, which is something you cannot do in Big Bend, so that was a treat.
Know that the area is suited for only primitive camping, but that the pit toilet is very clean and easy to find.
Visitors also really need to know that the wind can really kick up (50-70 miles an hour) and take your tent for a ride, so be sure to have a small, low tent and use stakes to hold it down.
While there is the possibility of internet, that is an additional cost, which is not clear until you get there, but if you want a real experience "off the grid," its perfect for that.

Directions were impeccable (note this is about an hour south of Alpine) and road into site was as described. Site 1 had beautiful views and a fire pit. Rig did need to be leveled.

Staying here was fantastic. COVID friendly and Kyle was a great host. We got in latish on Friday night so he greeted us the next morning to check in on us and gave great recommendations for things to do in the national park. Already planning my next trip out to the park and will definitely be booking here again!

Went back for a 2nd trip...enjoyed it just as much as the first. The place is well suited as a Basecamp to reach many places in the area. I will be back there again in the future.

A slight confusing to locate our site at first. The view of the mountains at Tierra del Sol is fantastic! The only problem we encountered was that we were unable to set up our tent due to the rocks in the ground, our stakes wouldnt go through. And a heads up its pretty windy in the area and dusty so be prepared.

Incredible scenery with the privacy and isolation I expected. Host was extremely attentive and helpful. Convenient to big bend national park but prepare for a 30 minute drive each way to the park entrance. Make sure you bring appropriate safety equipment to manage in case of dead car batteries or flat tires - the host can help but you are on your own. Also be ready for high winds. Views of the mountains and stars were like nothing I've seen before. Will definitely be back! Thank you Kyle!
