Houston road trip
Merus was a great place to camp and 4 wheel. We had no issues finding it using Google maps, it took us right to the front gate. Check in was fast and easy and the map and park explanation from the guy whose name I can't remember was very informative. We stayed at tent campsite B and everything about it was great, from the views, to the sunsets and sunrises and the seclusion of that spot it couldn't be beat. Also If you are tent camping be sure to use all your stakes. It wasn't windy the whole time but it had it's moments. 4 wheeling was a lot of fun, the trails are well marked and correspond well with the map we were given. They can be pretty much as easy as you want it to as challenging as you want and everything in between. We drove up from Houston and it was well worth the drive, we liked it a lot and will return for a couple days in the spring before it gets to hot.
Amazing definitely check it out
What a fantastic spot
Today we went to the other side of the canyon to the state park area and we definitely felt so privileged to stay at Merus and be able to camp right on the canyon and be the only ones there!
We didn’t have a 4x4 but enjoyed camping our Winnebago at camp h the views were amazing
And we disnt see another person or rv!
I’d you have a 4x4 you will be in heaven I’m sure’
Absolutely recommend for the amazing views and tranquility

We stayed here for a little bit of different reasons than most might. We stayed here really just to camp and experience a primitive camping experience as well as hiking and exploring. We did find it quite difficult at least Where we were camped to find any trails leading into the canyon. (as a sidenote I do find it quite peculiar in a little bit annoying that while we are paying to stay at a campsite it cost extra to go hiking . I do understand for doing off-road exploring and maybe mountain biking to buy a pass, but I do find it stupid to charge to go hiking. I would suggest leaving that off entirely since I can’t imagine anyone just going and being restricted to their campsite )
Overall it was a great experience. This is definitely a primitive camping experience unlike anything that I have been on before. We were well prepared for out privative camp spot though.
A few notable things to point out.
We stayed three nights and one of the nights we experienced a wind storm like I never have in a tent. I had read many other reviewers mention the wind but wasn’t totally prepared for what we experienced.
For breakfast one morning we were infested with Honey Bees…. Yes Honey Bees,. There must have been a wild Bee hive somewhere near bye because they were everywhere. Fortunately they weren’t aggressive , just really a nuisance. The night sky was probably my favorite part. It was really dark and the star gazing was amazing.
The camp sites could be a little smoother.
Not gonna lie we felt a bit duped driving there because it is nothing but flat farm land. But once you pull onto the property then this BEAUTIFUL canyon is there and it is incredible! Molly was super nice and greeted us upon arrival. Camped out on top of lookout and had incredible views from sunrise to sunset! Would stay here again!
Awesome place! The campsites are so spread out, that it really feels like you have the whole place to yourself. The adventure park is on the other side, so your not bothered with the noise of the vehicles. I was out there for 4 days & it was peaceful the whole time! And you have an amazing view over looking the canyon! Molly was very nice & helpful also! I'll definitely be back & next time do some wheeling. This was a relaxing trip for me!
