Make a Grand Getaway to the Happy Horse Hotel! We're a small, quiet, privately owned and operated, totally tidy and safe place to spend quality outdoor time alone or with family and friends. In business since 2001, we are located between Austin and Bastrop only 2 miles from LCRA's fabulous McKinney Roughs Nature Park with its 18 miles of glorious river and highland trails open to horses, hikers and cyclists.
Fire rings and firewood, unique outhouses and enclosed open-air hot water showers. BBQ grills, picnic tables, a covered pavilion area, trails on site and plenty of time away from the hustle and bustle. Many horse pens and 2 covered 12x12 stalls for those of you traveling with horses. On site owners Hollis and Beaux are at your beck and call for whatever you might need. We have been a "Horse People Only" campground for many years but recently opened our facility to people who just want to be camping and enjoying some outdoor time in the country.
GET AWAY without going FAR AWAY! Feels like the middle of nowhere, but it's only 25 miles to downtown Austin and 15 miles to the charming little town of Bastrop with its eateries, shops and historic buildings. Spend quiet nights in the country listening to the coyotes howl and the owls hoot. Hike the Roughs or book a river canoe or kayak trip with one of the local outfitters. Bring the family and have a weekend event under the trees and covered shade of our Pony Pavilion! And altho the Happy Horse Band no longer plays for gathered guests in the pavilion, Hollis and her wonderful voice, great stories and sweet ukulele now offer LIVE MUSIC by your very own campfire, for your private enjoyment, in a socially-distanced manner. (See the EXTRAS category to book a 40 minute/weather-permitting show, or just get with Hollis when you show up at camp) Enjoy the park trails, the Happy Horse on-site Scavenger Hunt, the delightful maze of campground trails (on your bikes!) and the peace and quiet!
The hand-made cabin with a small porch is impeccably appointed with campy decor, a lot of cooking gear, table ware, small fridge, microwave (no stove or oven), electric skillet, inviting beds and linens, an indoor table and chairs, cozy heat and chilly AC. The darling outdoor privy and hot-water shower are mere yards away! There is a water source and washing bowl on the front porch for quick rinse-offs and a hot-water sink for dish-washing nearby. The cabin has a picnic table, fire ring, couple of chairs and a BBQ grill. We have seasoned oak firewood for sale on site, so if you don't have room to bring some, we got you covered for enjoying an evening of s'mores and star-gazing at the dark skies.
The Bungalow sleeps 4 with a king and 2 twin beds. Blankets, towels, pillows and all bed linens are provided. Cabin is a two-night minimum stay and will be empty for one night before your arrival, as per covid considerations.

My family and I had a wonderful stay! We stayed in the cabin on a chilly weekend and it was very warm and cozy. The grounds are incredibly well maintained and Hollis and Beaux were very kind, attentive, and welcoming. The amenities were great, the other campers were spaced out enough for privacy but were also very respectful, and the scavenger hunt was a lot of fun for us all. Thank you both for a wonderful experience! We'd love to come back again.
A hidden gem!
Took a mini weekend with my daughter and granddaughter for a peaceful, relaxing getaway. Happy Horse Cabin provided us more than we expected. While not a 5 star hotel, the personal service, fresh washed linen and everything we “needed” was A+. If you’re looking for a place to find peace of mind and to enjoy the serenity and the sounds of nature or just to read a good book while becoming one with nature, book this place. If you want to take a stroll on trails looking for treasures on the ground and in the trees, see the fire flies at dusk and stars in the sky, listen to the CDs about the beautiful land, or Hollis playing the Ukulele….I highly recommend booking your stay at the Happy Horse Cabin. Thanks so much to our hosts Hollis and Beaux!
Amazing place. Hollis and Beaux are a so epic hosts. The property is perfectly laid out with tons of room to explore. Hot outdoor shower is a nice treat as well.
Highly recommended and will be back.
I am ready to go back and I was just there!!!! My hosts were awesome!!! I immediately felt at home in the cabin, so cute and bed was so comfortable. The outdoor shower was perfect. I walked the trails and enjoyed the horses. A perfect escape. Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing time!
Another great stay!
Great weekend at the Happy Horse Hotel! My youngest daughter found a few more items on the trail scavenger hunt and we enjoyed a nice campfire with live music! This was our second visit and definitely not our last.
