Run away - do
This is absolutely the most traumatic vacation/camping experience I have ever encountered my children are traumatized with how Chris acted we were all very, very uncomfortable and shook by the experience.
According to Chris’ rules #2 and #12 we did our due diligence and researched making sure there was no burn ban in the county we were staying in. We are rule followers and I have anxiety I checked the rules multiple times to make sure we complied.
When we arrived, after we set up, we were unsure where the proper fire area was as it was not clearly marked. We saw an area we assumed to be where previous campers had fires as it was a circle with no grass and discarded ash nearby. Minutes after we started the fire Chris arrived informed us that it was not the proper area. We complied saying we would move it to the proper area he pointed out to us (which no surprised we missed it wad overgrown with weeds and did not seem safe to have a fire in as the weeds would have caught fire). So we had just planned to move all the wood we had just ignited to the proper area and clean up the area we had used. Chris left but before we could extinguish the fire he returned yelling (not exaggerating) at us “THIS IS ALL WRONG YOU NEED TO LEAVE”. We kindly explained it was getting dark, we had small children and our drive was 3-4 hours home. Being in a remote area, no cell phone service, dark and winding roads. We felt very uncomfortable packing up and driving home as it was unsafe, we could get easily lost and have no way of contacting help. Chris’ response was “I DONT CARE”. We owned our mistake, apologized and complied and left as we felt unsafe staying in an area near someone who berated us and our children and we feared could become violent. We 100% validate Chris being upset, but someone of Chris’ temperament and composure and ability to communicate have no space in hosting on his property.
This was my first and likely last HipCamp experience sadly. We are a frequent Vrbo, AirBNB and Homeaway vacationing family so we are used to a variety of rules and eccentric hosts, but never ever have experienced anything like this. We are super sad on the time we missed out with our friends and family, the trauma imposed on our children (they are still reliving and retelling what happened to process today) and the potential danger Chris put us in asking us to leave after dark.
We had a great experience here! The spot was beautiful and had everything we needed. The host checked on us to say hello and make sure we had what needed then allowed us to enjoy the campsite in privacy. We would gladly go back!
Amazing river site!
This is an awesome campsite! We really enjoyed our stay and spent most of our time in the river. The only issue we had were ants on the site (there’s always something when you’re camping!) so our legs got covered in bites. But we had no mosquito issues or any other bug or critter issues. There was a cute little orange cat that came to the site each night and hung out with us. The view in the river was beautiful and the water was perfect. The owner seems very nice and brought us an extra propane tank for the giant grill on site. There isn’t much shade during mid-day so I suggest bringing a pop-up canopy. Ours made a huge difference especially since it’s August and very hot out. There is no cell or internet service...at all. Not for miles. So if you wanna get to Garner, have a map ready.
Nice quiet spot on the Frio and away from everything. We couldn’t even pick up a radio station. Perfect spot to go view the meteor shower! The water was perfect, and our puppy had his first swim! Chris is an excellent host. We will definitely keep this one on our list to go back.
Nice spot on the river with a portapotty, grill, and a sink. Makes camping pretty easy. I was tent camping and you are aware of the neighbors, I suspect this would not be an issue in an RV.
Awesome place to stay & camp
We recently stayed at Chris's place for the weekend & enjoyed the scenery. Chris came over to introduce himself when we first arrived & let us know some information about the property & cell service. This is a beautiful piece of property that has the west frio at the edge of it so you can enjoy some peace & quiet while hanging out in the river or laying back at night looking at the stars. We will definitely be coming back for our future camping trips.
Great spot on the frio!
Chris was a responsive host - answered all of my questions quickly. He also greeted us our first evening to make sure we had everything we needed.
The lot is nice, and clean. Dumpster on site was great when we were packing up to leave! The best part was that you can hear the river from the campsite, and the water is just a few steps down a sloped incline to the perfect shallow pools. If you walk a ways down, the water is deeper for swimming. Not a whole lot of shade at the campsite, but the water spot was not too hot.
A few things to note that are not within hosts' control: It seemed to be a pretty busy neighborhood, so no true privacy. Cars and ATVs were going by quite a bit throughout the day/evening. Our spot on the water was very private, which was nice (only saw one or two other families, and they were just passing through). But you can see and hear the lots on either side. Our second night, a neighboring lot was playing loud music until about 4 am. Again, nothing against the spot - just to be aware of depending on the experience you are looking for!
Also, we have Verizon as our phone provider, and had no service whatsoever within an hour radius of the campsite. In case that is also a concern for you, it might be good to know ahead of time!
Overall, the water (and access to it) was out favorite part. We will be back, I'm sure.
