WHAT:

Chaos Ranch is 300 acres that primarily serves as a donkey sanctuary.  The ranch is made up of 6 separate pastures ranging from 25 acres to 75 acres each. You are free to explore the entire 300 acres of pastures on the property.  74 curious jenny donkeys roam the property.  There are wide open spaces to fly kites and take nature walks.

WHERE:

We are in West/Central Texas, located just 1 hour south of I-20 and 1.5 hours north of I-10.  San Angelo (population 103,000) is 20 miles away from us.  Our place is located 3 miles outside of the charming town of Miles (population 830.)

WHAT KIND OF CAMPING WE CURRENTLY OFFER:

You can primitive camp anywhere on the 300 acre property.  We also have 3 “sites” set up on the creek area with tractor rims for fires.  These are sites 1, 2, and 3 on the map and are all within comfortable walking distance to a composting toilet in a deer blind for privacy.  If you would rather camp somewhere away from the creek, just select site 4 during booking and you can set up anywhere else you like.  Tent camping, sleeper vehicles or even very small popups or teardrops are ok.  You are welcome to get potable water at the house.  The pen and barn area has a real working windmill that feeds a 20” concrete above ground water tank that you can jump in.

WHAT WE CURRENTLY DON’T OFFER:

Water, electric, and sewer hookups are NOT available at this time.  No showers at this time.  We are working on these for the future.  We are unable to do day tours, as we both have day jobs and are an overnight camping experience only.  If you are just seeking a few hours of donkey interaction as opposed to camping, definitely reach out to Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue.  They are awesome and will be happy to schedule a tour for you at their headquarters between San Angelo and Miles.

WHY SHOULD YOU COME SEE US:

We welcome ALL campers, no matter where you are from or where you are in life. We strive to offer a safe location for female/and or solo campers and are here if you need anything at all.  If you want to skip crowded and loud campgrounds, we can deliver.  We have only just begun to document the birds but so far have seen vermillion flycatchers, hooded mergansers, and numerous species of hawks and owls.  Commonly encountered animals are the horned toad, nine banded armadillo, nutria, deer and rabbits.  And of course, the donkey herd is adorable and you are welcome to interact with them.

NEARBY SUPPLIES, EATERIES, & THINGS TO DO:

Miles has a great little grocery store, Sklenarik's Meat Market, and The Depot for supplies.  You can also find some great Mexican food at Los Carlos, have a cold beer and burger at the Catch Pen, and get some of the best pizza around at Frozen in Time.  Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue and Lost Meadows Mule Refuge Headquarters are 8 miles away.  This is who the donkeys on the property belong to; we lease them grazing so the donkeys have a safe and natural environment to live in.  Check Peaceful Valley out on a free tour; they love guests and educating them on the plight of the American donkey.  Their tours are available M-F and on Saturday by appointment.  Cactus Town is also 8 miles away and is open Saturdays from 8-3.  They have tons of cool stuff including cactus, plants, rocks, antiques, etc.

**PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING**

***Check in is officially after 2:00 p.m., but we can usually accommodate a little earlier.  We ask that you arrive before dark, which is generally 8:00 p.m. or so.  The reason for this is that the place is large and there are gates and whatnot that need to be navigated in order to get to the best camping.  Finding your campsite on your own is the dark will be impossible.***

Accessibility to our sites on Chaos Ranch can get difficult if it rains, and we will do our best to keep you aware of those situations and to help plan.  Worse case scenario if this happens is that you can set up in the front right off the Farm to Market Road, close to our house and hike the rest of the place from there.  Roads can be less than ideal for very low clearance vehicles.  Please contact us before booking to address any concerns.

As with all operations that have livestock, there will be manure in pastures.  There will also be agriculture sounds (roosters, tractors in the distance, occasional overhead aircraft, cattle mooing, forklifts) and possible smells from neighboring cattle, depending on weather conditions.  Gun shots from neighboring properties are not common, but could be possible.

West Texas has cactus, prickly plants, insects and the possibility of snake encounters, both venomous and non-venomous.

Please know it gets HOT here and be prepared.  We can go from beautiful and green pastures to crunchy and brown in a matter of weeks.  Please reach out before booking to understand current conditions.

Well behaved pets are welcomed.  Definitely read the pet rules to understand the expectations and considerations before bringing your animal.  We want to protect both them and our livestock.

Chandra, Jared, the dogs and the donkeys are SPECTACULAR! We drove cross-country from NYC to San Diego, and can honestly say that our best memories were made at this Texan "paradise". Chandra and Jared are out of this world: Friendly, worldly, personal, loving, caring,... Not only did we feel welcome, we felt a deep genuine connection. We loved every minute of our stay, and can't express the joy/calmness we felt by interacting with the donkeys. We only had one night (we had a tight schedule), and were really sad to leave.... We invited the hosts to come to NYC, and hope to be back at the farm soon! Please don't hesitate to make a reservation - it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Laurence and Samer, thank you two so much! We are thrilled our paths crossed and will definitely take you up on meeting up in the near future in NYC. You are always welcome back here, always. This is seriously the best part of Hipcamp so far...getting to meet and connect with people we would have otherwise never known. We are so happy you enjoyed the donkey "therapy." They are truly amazing animals, and we love sharing them and the place with everyone. Until next time, <3 Jared and Chandra

The sight of 70+ donkeys coming up from the lower pasture was incredible and entertaining. Sunrise was spectacular. I enjoyed my short, one-night stay. I found the hosts to be genial, flexible and incredibly helpful. It's a beautiful place and I would definitely come again. Oh, and the gift of eggs were a welcome bonus.
