Bear Valley Cow Camp
Remote and Quite
I drove to Bear Valley through Prineville, Post and Paulina. My GPS misled me to a neighboring ranch and to a road that had been vacated. I met Mat on arrival and we had a pleasant conversation. The site was great. Remote and the stars were clear and close with out any glare from city lights. There were more coyotes around the one night I stayed than any where I have been. To the west of the camp site is a slight bowl with pine trees. It forms a natural echo chamber. A single coyote gave us a long serenade as we packed up. It was a great, but short stay. The coyotes are present in mass so I kept a close eye on my dogs.

Quiet and Solitude
If you like quiet and solitude in a natural setting, then this is your place. Well worth driving a little out of the way. The hosts allow you to roam over a large area that abuts the National Forest. A mixture of pines, brushes and native grasses. No cheatgrass. So quiet you can bird by sound with a nice mixture of raptors, ground nesters, woodpeckers, and songbirds. A splendid location.

Bear Valley Cow Camp
Peaceful stay for disconnection
This is a really beautiful and peaceful property. I would recommend staying here if you are comfortable being fully off the grid in an alone and remote area. I wish I’d mentally prepared a bit more for the cowboy solitude; but if you feel comfortable out in the open with no cell service - this place is for you! Nothing like sleeping out in the pasture with the cows and hearing the coyotes howl at the full moon. I didn’t sleep much but it was a neat experience.

Bear Valley Cow Camp
Big Sky Country!
It was wonderful to stay on the open range, with not another human in sight. This place wins the prize for best pit toilet ever! Clean, fresh-smelling, and what a view!!! We enjoyed hearing the coyotes, the birds, the cows moo-ing in the distance. Jennifer was fascinating to talk to and gave some very helpful suggestions re: the most beautiful route to take the next day. We arrived at the destination after sunset, so the map, which we got from Jennifer, was very helpful—just remember to turn right just after you go through the second gate and follow the fence line. You’ll get there no problem. Such a different and refreshing wide-open camping experience with the HUGE sky at night. So glad we came!

Bear Valley Cow Camp
Blissful isolation
This was a totally isolated camping space (although we probably could have camped in many places according to the map) way out in the middle of nowhere. Really cute gopher things everywhere to greet you! If you’re not careful you might drive into the national forest like I did, the campsite isn’t clearly marked along the way. Also there’s a very dangerous barbed wire fence to open that anyone with mobility issues would probably not be able to access at all - I was unable to close it. Well water is ONLY at the barn so don’t go to the site without filling up. If you know to expect a totally roughing it space then it’s quite nice to be out and totally alone out there. I just didn’t quite get HOW ALONE from the listing. Very nice owners who helped me find my way when I was lost though!
