Welcome to Yurtle by the pond. Nominated best Glamping structure in Canada.

Located on our beautiful 97-acre property, “Yurtle by the Pond” is a newly constructed glamping structure made from hemlock trees that were sustainably harvested from this forest.

The bunkie includes a small deck and awning with large windows. There is a futon pull-out bed, solar light, and soft candle lighting. If you are bringing more than 2 guests, you must bring tents as the bunkie only comfortably fits 2 people (there is plenty of space to pitch your tent around the bunkie). The custom made wood stove heats Yurtle nicely and guests stay warm and cozy during the cold winter months.

The site can be accessed by a traditional car, no off-roading or 4-wheel drive vehicle is needed. We are a family-friendly (including pets!) campsite. Campfires are permitted and we have a picnic table for you and your group to enjoy your meals.

The property is a certified managed forest and is a bird watcher’s and nature lover’s paradise. We have miles of flat groomed trails and a 3-acre pond (plus several bush ponds). Humans do not live here.

Shopping and all amenities are under 15 minutes away! The property is close to Georgian Bay for swimming, fishing, boating/sailing, paddling and beaches. We are also close to the cities of Orillia and Midland/Penetanguishene for dining, shopping, arts, and many historical sites. Historical sites include Fort Ste Marie Among the Hurons, War of 1812 British Naval Establishment, Kings Wharf Theatre, Martrys Shrine, Huronia Museum and more.

Firewood is available for sale @ $7/bag of hardwood. Please DO NOT import/bring firewood, the risk of transferring an invasive insect is not worth it.  We are inclusive, tolerant and respectful of all campers and wildlife and expect the same behaviour from our guests.

Directions will be provided after booking. There has been much confusion with google maps for this site. Yurtle is in Tay Township not Tiny Township and I would be happy to help clarify any difficulties that may be encountered.

I look forward to hosting you and peace be with you!

“Yurtle by the Pond” provided a refreshing and quaint setting for my friends and me to enjoy a two-night getaway over the winter holidays. The host, Dave, greeted us upon our arrival and gave us the lay of the land. He and his dog, Noël, were quite friendly, making periodic appearances over the course of the three days. Dave has extensive knowledge of the local environment and was very responsive if we needed anything (such as extra firewood). Two of us slept in the yurtle (sort of a small wood cabin) and one of us slept in the bus (an old repurposed school bus buried in the earth to serve as an extra shelter), both of which are heated by wood stoves. The temperature hovered around 0 degrees celsius outside, and we were able to stay pretty warm through the night with blankets and sleeping bags. It is worth mentioning that the outhouse is also very well constructed, and even contains a mirror -- thus enabling me to continue to look my best even at my most rugged!

Now, as promised, here is a poem:

An Ode to Noël

A charmed hemlock forest enchanted
by scurrying creatures who dance across
the pond, no ice broken.
Bangarangs be damned!

Owls wait in hiding.
Men search in vain.

A cheery exchange
among travelers who toil smiling
over smoked bats
and chopped wood.

We tread carefully, bed over bridge.
She fears nothing, chasing
squirrels over fragile
ice sheets.

We visited the Yurtle in late December - the forest was quiet and peaceful. The Yurtle provided a cozy alternative to tenting. The full length window offered a great view of the surrounding forest. Dave was generous in sharing his appreciation of the land. He was very welcoming and accommodating.

Dave is tireless in his efforts to perfect his beautiful property and keep it easily accessible to visitors. The Yurtle should be your number one choice, especially as the seasons change, because it's a perfectly built mini cabin where you can experience the comforts of shelter with no sacrifice of experiencing nature, mostly due to the beautiful floor to ceiling window. Dave is warm, welcoming, and proud of his property. Make sure to book here!

Keeping cozy as the autumn temperatures drop.Dave's land is sprawling, so he offers a map upon arrival for your own adventures. He made it a priority for lots of natural light to get in the cabin so here you see the back window. As you can see, being tucked away in the woods is so lovely, feels like backcountry camping with the ability to drive right to the door!

Very comfortable and cozy. Much better than a tent but room for a tent too. Private and quiet and peaceful in the forest.

Beautiful private property and great location close to Midland, sightseeing and restaurants etc. However if you’re like us and don’t want to leave the campground there’s plenty to do on site such as hiking trails and a large pond surrounded by acres of trees and wildlife. The underground bus was a trip. The wife loved the yurt and the best part was no tent to set up and take down and no worries about getting rained out. Highly recommend and we’ll be back next summer!
