The people were very nice. The shower water was hot and bathroom was warm. It was very comfortable with good water pressure. Since we stayed in November this was a big plus. To me the tent sites were small with not much privacy. There was one campfire for all the tent sites in the area. If it was full, we would have been on top of the other people but luckily we were the only ones at the time.
Beautiful and peaceful
Camp @ Cloudcroft was a great experience. The Lincoln National Forest is gorgeous and the camp grounds at right on the river so it's really pretty, peaceful, and cool in the summer.
Clay and the staff at the campground are responsive and take good care of the grounds. I was doing a road trip with a plan to tent camp solo at Bull Creek Falls but the road was closed when I got there due to flooding so last minute I tried to find accommodations via Hipcamp and Camp @ Cloudcroft was a top pick 80 miles away. Clay responded instantly and they got me sorted out even though it was very last minute and late in the day. Great hospitality.
It's pretty quiet except for the occasional loud truck that goes by on the road but it's infrequent enough and far enough away that it isn't a problem. At night there's very little traffic. Other campers are really chill and relaxed, it's a great atmosphere.
They had a community barn, the barn had a functioning microwave and stove so I could heat up my dinner. The bathrooms for campers were clean and well cared for.
All of the tent campsites are right along the river so it's really pretty, peaceful, and sleep was amazing. The only downside to the proximity with the river was that the sites are located on a flat area between the hillside and the river that doesn't drain very well, so after rain it leaves a thick clumpy mud. As a backpacker it's not a big problem to me but if it rained hard it would pool and I think the run off from the hill would be problematic, it drizzled on me and it was completely fine but that's worth thinking about. They have a few sites that weren't muddy and were well drained but they were slightly more expensive.
A great little gem I'm really happy I found and I'll be staying here again.
Looks good for rv, but not for tent
Not a great spot for tent camping. There are no marked tent sites, just some set-aside areas without dividers. One of the three tent areas was too wet to be used (in August). On our second night we had extremely loud neighbors partying very close to us until about 2am. The camp host (Chip, not the “Clay” listed on all the Hipcamp messages) was asleep (lucky him!) It’s not like me to write a negative review! But when me and my kids left this place we all had a desire to help future tent folks avoid this one.
Ignored me until they saw dollars..
A storm was coming, so I reached out to them to see if I could modify the departure date. They completely ignored me, keeping my money for the stormy night. I was bothered, but put it behind me as I hit the road to my next destination. Suddenly I get this message saying I need to contact them, that it’s urgent. When I do they accuse me of sleeping in the “pavilion”. They couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge me when I needed to leave early, but seeing an opportunity to charge more after I left they urgently need me to contact them. Nope, not staying here again.
