Streife translated from Norwegian means roam. The right to roam, also called the right of access, or everyman's right “allemannsretten” is a traditional right from ancient times, and since 1957 has also been a part of the Norwegian Outdoor Recreation Act. It ensures that everybody gets to experience nature, even on larger privately owned areas.

In our travels to Norway we learned of this law and loved the concept so much we brought it back with us to America. Yet we had no land to offer. So we searched...and searched.....and searched some more. Then we found what would become Camp Streife. 20 acres of uncut timber growth forest, tucked in the western hills of Rumford, Maine. With a private brook, nearby pond and within 20 minutes of some of our favorite ski locations, it was just right.

The rules of this law are simple. Be considerate and thoughtful. Don't damage nature and surrounding areas. Leave the landscape as you would want to find it. Leave no trace.

You may put up a tent, or sleep under the stars, anywhere in the countryside, forests or mountains, as long as you keep at least 500 feet away from the nearest inhabited house or cabin. This rule of a 500 feet distance also applies to camping cars and caravans.

If you want to stay for more than two nights in the same place, you must ask the landowner's permission, except in the mountains or very remote areas.

Well we've taken care of all the Allemannsretten rules for you.

With a fire pit to sit next to and a tent platform to lay upon. Maybe you’ll hear the call of an owl as you gaze at the stars amongst a field of ferns. Then wake up to the peaceful morning sounds of birds as you have a coffee at the picnic table.

We invite you to our small part of the world, and encourage you to exercise your right to roam.

Backcountry camping on Adrian and Tara’s land was great! The spot was secluded and private, in a very pretty clearing full of ferns and surrounded by trees. Tara messaged with very clear directions for finding the site and we had no trouble at all. The listing is very accurate - which is great because we came well prepared. There is a fire ring (nice touch) and not much else .. so we were glad we brought plenty of water, a folding table and luggable loo camping toilet. The location was really convenient to Sunday River and Grafton Notch state park … plus the pad locked gate at the entrance gave us that extra bit of peace of mind about leaving our stuff there all day while we went out exploring. There are a couple of other small camps along the dirt road but for the most part we didn’t see or hear another soul while at the site … exactly what we were looking for. Our 11 year old Brittany spaniel also had a wonderful time chasing crickets and smells all around the camp site and we didn’t feel at all nervous about letting him wander. Thanks Adrian and Tara for being such wonderful hosts and for listing on hip camp! We’d love to come back (especially when you put the tent platform in!!)

Booked a last minute camping trip to Adrian's site and loved it! The directions given were so detailed and made it easy navigating to the site. The site was quiet, relaxing and private. I loved the field of ferns and would love to see it in the fall. We loved the walk to the pond down the road. One of the neighbors stopped on their way past the site and gave us a squash from his garden!! So nice and so yummy 😊 I recommend this listing!

Loved all the ferns that surrounded us. It would be beautiful during the fall. A peaceful morning at the pond. Loved the dirt road leading to the site. This pond is right down the road from the site and made for a perfect walk.

Real Maine, real camping, just like driving down any logging road except you pay 20 bucks for the peace of mind you won't wake up to a redneck party or a landowner's shotgun. Well worth it. Amazing place and lots to explore in the area. Very likely I'll be taking my girlfriend back there.

Great piece of land to camp on! It’s the perfect spot between towns and fun hiking spots. The sky is absolutely beautiful at the campsite day and night. 10/10 recommend and will be back!

Great hosts. Will answer any question and give great detailed directions. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, you’ve found it. Their lot is a great place to poke the fire in the fire pit, watch the clouds, and see the stars. Pond right down the road that is great for kayaking, fishing, canoeing, or just sitting on the bank relaxing. We had 3 dogs with us and they had a blast sniffing all over the peoperty. Keep your eyes open for a moose, found a fresh moose print just past the fire pit the day we arrived. If a great backcountry camping experience is what you’re looking for, you found it

I had booked this trip last minute on the day of arriving. And I could not have asked for a better place. The property is large with lots to explore. Very peaceful and quiet. If you want to look at the stars this is the place for you. The host was more then helpful when I had got myself lost at night. This is a must return for me. I enjoyed it very much.
