Houston road trip
Merus was a great place to camp and 4 wheel. We had no issues finding it using Google maps, it took us right to the front gate. Check in was fast and easy and the map and park explanation from the guy whose name I can't remember was very informative. We stayed at tent campsite B and everything about it was great, from the views, to the sunsets and sunrises and the seclusion of that spot it couldn't be beat. Also If you are tent camping be sure to use all your stakes. It wasn't windy the whole time but it had it's moments. 4 wheeling was a lot of fun, the trails are well marked and correspond well with the map we were given. They can be pretty much as easy as you want it to as challenging as you want and everything in between. We drove up from Houston and it was well worth the drive, we liked it a lot and will return for a couple days in the spring before it gets to hot.

Amazing definitely check it out
What a fantastic spot Today we went to the other side of the canyon to the state park area and we definitely felt so privileged to stay at Merus and be able to camp right on the canyon and be the only ones there! We didn’t have a 4x4 but enjoyed camping our Winnebago at camp h the views were amazing And we disnt see another person or rv! I’d you have a 4x4 you will be in heaven I’m sure’ Absolutely recommend for the amazing views and tranquility 100 out of 10

Pretty cool
We stayed here for a little bit of different reasons than most might. We stayed here really just to camp and experience a primitive camping experience as well as hiking and exploring. We did find it quite difficult at least Where we were camped to find any trails leading into the canyon. (as a sidenote I do find it quite peculiar in a little bit annoying that while we are paying to stay at a campsite it cost extra to go hiking . I do understand for doing off-road exploring and maybe mountain biking to buy a pass, but I do find it stupid to charge to go hiking. I would suggest leaving that off entirely since I can’t imagine anyone just going and being restricted to their campsite ) Overall it was a great experience. This is definitely a primitive camping experience unlike anything that I have been on before. We were well prepared for out privative camp spot though. A few notable things to point out. We stayed three nights and one of the nights we experienced a wind storm like I never have in a tent. I had read many other reviewers mention the wind but wasn’t totally prepared for what we experienced. For breakfast one morning we were infested with Honey Bees…. Yes Honey Bees,. There must have been a wild Bee hive somewhere near bye because they were everywhere. Fortunately they weren’t aggressive , just really a nuisance. The night sky was probably my favorite part. It was really dark and the star gazing was amazing. The camp sites could be a little smoother.

Not gonna lie we felt a bit duped driving there because it is nothing but flat farm land. But once you pull onto the property then this BEAUTIFUL canyon is there and it is incredible! Molly was super nice and greeted us upon arrival. Camped out on top of lookout and had incredible views from sunrise to sunset! Would stay here again!

Awesome place! The campsites are so spread out, that it really feels like you have the whole place to yourself. The adventure park is on the other side, so your not bothered with the noise of the vehicles. I was out there for 4 days & it was peaceful the whole time! And you have an amazing view over looking the canyon! Molly was very nice & helpful also! I'll definitely be back & next time do some wheeling. This was a relaxing trip for me!

A Gem
Boondocking at Merus was an amazing experience! So much so, that I was hesitant in writing a review in fear of encouraging others to visit the place. Despite it being a 4x4 paradise, it was surprisingly quiet for a Saturday. I really wasn't expecting that but was happy to find out that Dirk and his wife Christine (?) don't allow side by sides and enforced a 5 mph speed limit, which may have explained the silence. Their view is that Merus be a family park, which was a personal relief to hear, because after visiting the place and seeing how special it is, it would be a shame to have it just become another place ruined by adults acting like adolescents. The views of the canyon were breathtaking and the rural setting amongst huge tracts of private land meant a feeling of isolation that is difficult to find other than in public lands found in the Rocky Mountain states. Merus was the highlight of our trip from Denver to the Florida Keys, and we're already longing to go back. (And an endnote: Pack it In, Pack it Out! And that includes your used toiled paper, people! While taking a little hike, my wife and I came across a recently camped site littered with used toilet paper and baby wipes. For the life of me, I do not understand how people can come to a place for its natural beauty and mar it with their personal trash. Leave No Trace! Leave it better for the next.)

Best Campsite Ever
What a magical place to camp! We had total privacy and a warm clear night so we slept without our rain fly. Beautiful night sky and so cool hearing coyotes in the background. Was a bit concerned about the road in, but our Prius did great on the roads there. Absolutely book this place. Probably the best campsite we've ever had. Only regret is only staying for one night!

This place is awesome, you'd never think it was in Texas. We drove from Colorado and had a great time. I think Dirk really has something special here and could make this into something even more awesome. The only downfall to me is that they don't allow UTV's. But I understand why. Some UTV riders drive like idiots and that could injury other people but it would be awesome to drive a UTV in here. I'd suggest maybe changing your rules to allow UTV's but to put a speed limit on them and enforce the speeders. But all in all it was an awesome trip for us.

Primitive camping with amazing view
Visited over Labor Day weekend expecting some crowds and were pleasantly surprised to discover a relatively peaceful weekend. The camping spots are spread out and the only times we saw other people was when we went driving around the trails. Lots of hiking opportunities but it was super hot so we just hung around camp in the shade. There’s not much shade, so bring your own. It also can be SUPER windy, so be sure to bring plenty of tie downs for your camp.

It’s a really cool spot along the top of the canyon. We had camp point E and it was totally easy to get to in the Subaru Forester. Would definitely recommend. It’s a spacious spot to set up multiple tents or what have you. No water offered, no toilet, just be prepared for that. And be careful of reading the map incorrectly at the beginning. We started to but corrected ourselves. Just be really attentive to that. Otherwise it was very straightforward. Only stayed one night but would love to explore the site more in the future.

Beautiful spot with great views! The weather wasn’t great so we didn’t really get to explore but got a front row seat to an amazing storm and saw the canyon lit up with lightening! Dirk was super responsive and friendly and the property was exceptionally well maintained. Hoping to stay again if we ever make it make it back this way!

New go-to.
We will be back. Definitely; and as much as I want to tell the world about it - I don’t want to tell anybody, haha. I want it to be the perfect secret spot, but these people are making such an amazing place for people to explore, have fun, and learn. Can’t wait to see where this place goes in the coming years.
