Tolkien readers know that Grey Havens is actually the last chapter of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. We embrace Tolkien's imagination. Readers and writers especially like our lakefront property. We especially encourage writers and readers looking for retreat. We facilitate relaxation and inspiration. Starting with our Little Free Library, each accommodation has a unique small Library inside . We have quiet, segregated spaces inside or outside for writing or reading. You can even purchase works by the host/author onsite. But we are not just about books. We also encourage water recreation activities: swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing. We have a free boat launch for your watercraft. We are on a small biologically special kettle lake, the source of the Styx River. Our lake water is flushed with cool underground water. For a description of the geology and biology of lake, consider the "Townsend Lake Cruise" on our unique eVessel, Swizzle Styx (book in the "Extras"). There is plenty of County Forest and Bruce Trailhead hiking opportunities also nearby. On our property are the following amenities: +Car parking (1/site; free) +Motorcycle friendly parking pads for touring riders (Free) +Wireless access (Free) +Spacious outdoor Privy used by all on site campers (All Free) +Dock and canoe/kayak launch (bring your own canoes/kayaks) +Patio/deck (20'x25') with fire circle, chairs and tables (burn only locally sourced wood by booking a "Firewood Bundle" OR a "Butane Cook Stove" in the "Extras") +A "Gear Wagon" (book in the "Extras") to transport your luggage, tents, gear and/or coolers from the car to the site you have booked. (And again on your way out also). Hip Campers have often asked for fire starting help. We recommend First Time/Novice Hip Campers consider the "Fire Workshop" extra. You get a "Firewood Bundle" a kit of firestarters and patient instruction on starting your first campfire. Grey Havens is waste wise: remove your garbage and cleanup your site to get up to $10 cleaning fee returned. Grey Havens was the final chapter in Tolkien's trilogy. We continue creating a paradise here. Hip Campers may wonder about the whale bench seen in many of our photographs. Ask your host about the story of our Whale Bench.

Lakefront Log Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 3
Our Log Cabin is cosy and comfortable. It is a 16'x16' log cabin with covered porch only steps away from our quiet Townsend Lake. The cabin is private but within sight of the host house. Grey Havens is waste wise: remove your garbage and cleanup your site to get a rebate on your $15 cleaning. Since 2024 we have added many improvements. The cabin is now heated (for shoulder seasons only) and access to the loft is available. We have added convenience features to our outdoor privy. For sleeping we provide a bed with fitted sheet, pillows and light blankets for cooler nights. You may also wish to bring your own additional warmer bedding. For adults with a child we have a single cot also. The cabin also has a single sleeping loft available (one adult only). Extra adults and children will need to bring bedding. Galley style kitchenette has a small bar fridge and Kuradori heating plate. Cooking supplies are basic: Small cooking pot, coffee/tea cups with potable water, an electric kettle, coffee press and tea pot. Washing sink is located in privy. The privy space attached to the Log Cabin may be shared by other users on the site. For outdoors Log Cabin guests have their own private patio for cooking/eating or just relaxing. The large campfire patio/deck (20'x25') is shared with other campers on site (burn only locally sourced wood by booking a "Firewood Bundle" OR use a "Butane Cook Stove" in "Extras"). You have sunrises through the front window in summer, and sunsets from the large shared deck. Get on the lake via the dock/kayak/canoe launch (For your own water craft). We are on a small biologically special kettle lake, the source of the Styx River. Our lake water is flushed with cool underground water. For a description of the geology and biology of lake, consider the "Townsend Lake Cruise" on our unique eVessel, Swizzle Styx (book in "Extras"). Our friendly Springer Spaniel will likely greet you long before we even know you are here. When guests are not in the cabin, it is the workspace of a retired biologist, author and nature-lover. Readers who like nature, lakes and streams will enjoy books from the library. Hip Campers may wonder about the whale bench. Ask your host about the story of our Whale Bench.

Elvish Suite

100%

Vacation rental · Sleeps 2
This is an exclusive secluded space. Located on the second floor of our home this is an entirely separate, private lodging unit. Shielded by cedar trees it is one short flight of stairs up to the covered, timber-framed deck (8'x12'). Tolkien's elves would be at home here but we do not allow pets in this suite. You will have a private bedroom and bathroom (composting toilet), shower and covered porch. We provide bedding, pillows and towels. The inside space is super quiet, isolated from the humdrum of a household. There is only light cooking on the deck using an "Butane Cook Stove" from the "Extras". A cafe table and chairs is provided. Alternatively open air cooking is possible. You will also have access to a large shared campfire patio/deck (20'x25') at our waterfront (burn only locally sourced wood by booking a "Firewood Bundle" from "Extras"). Other waterfront amenities that may be shared by others on the property include a dock and kayak/canoe launch (bring your own water craft). All guests that leave the space clean and tidy like Hip Campers should, will have $10 of the Cleaning Fee refunded. Readers can relax with a book of their own on the cool covered porch rain or shine. Or guests can enjoy an eclectic selection of books from the office of a working author. This space is your hosts writing retreat when not occupied by guests.
