The Hocking Hills Caboose was built in 1949 or 1950 by the International Car Company of Kenton, Ohio. This company specialized in making cabooses and was one of the first manufacturers to build them with steel (versus wood) exteriors. As railroads retired their cabooses, most were sold for scrap and destroyed. Ours, though, took a different journey. By 1995, it ended up with 17 other out-of-service cabooses from all different legacy railroads at CSX's Parsons yard outside of Columbus. Needing to clear out these cabooses, CSX offered the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad (HVSR) and its members the lot of cabooses. They accepted, and the cabooses were towed to HVSR, where many were restored for railroad service and remain today. However, HVSR member John Holt had a new plan for his new caboose. He had it towed to a piece of land in heart of the Hocking Hills he owned called Steep Woods, for conversion into a guest cottage. Learn more about this land: Located in the heart of the Hocking Hills, Ohio, just a few miles from Ash Cave, Old Mans Cave, Cedar Falls and Conkles Hollow, The Hocking Hills Caboose is a 1950's Seaboard Air Line Railroad caboose that's been converted to a guest cottage. Hocking Hills Caboose
Only sleeps three adults and two children ……children being up in bunkbeds (that are a bit too high actually) …could’ve used stove…would have loved cushions on outside chairs… no outdoor lights were working but it is very charming and very clean

Hocking Hills Caboose
The caboose was perfect for our family! It was spotless, comfortable and had everything that we needed. Just a quick drive to the different hiking spots and nice cool air conditioner to return to. The history of the caboose was very fun for our train loving Grandpa! The memories of this special experience will last forever!

Hocking Hills Caboose
A great place for a weekend family trip! Kids will like staying in the top bunks. The AC after hiking in the summer was great! The space is clean and well stocked of anenities (dish soap, hand soap, paper towels, bath towels, tp). The deck and grill were in good shape, and the fire pit area is a nice place to unwind. Will be back for sure!

Hocking Hills Caboose
As expected - some good surprises!
We were feeling cooped up in our house and though a tiny caboose would solve that problem... and it did. We loved the novelty, the bathroom was surprisingly clean and large, and the kitchen extremely well supplied. The grill was clean and the deck was large (we brought a big telescope!). However - SR 56 is pretty close, lots of motorcycles ripping down the road in the late afternoon - but pleasantly surprised by dead silence after 9. Loved the box fan in the closet for a little bit of nighttime white noise. We wished: for fewer no-see-ums (and tiki torches or a deck fan!) — for some clearing of the trail to the slate-bed creek (the tweens LOVED it!) - and for notice of the 8:30am lawn mowing crew. All in all, a hidden gem that we will refer friends too. Friends with bug spray.
