Having flown under the radar for quite some time, New Brunsick is one of Canada’s most intriguing spots, sandwiched between Maine in the United States to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Evidence of Acadian and First Nations cultures is everywhere, from food to historical sites, and the famed Bay of Fundy offers sandy beaches and coastlines forged by the world’s highest tides. Set on the Bay of Fundy and easily accessed from the U.S. border, the former industrial town of Saint John is the most well-known in New Brunswick. It’d be hard to visit the province without a stop in at the breweries and boutiques here, but the port city is also surrounded by nature and opportunities for beach camping and RV stays. RV and tent camping can be found right in Saint John, while oceanfront campgrounds dot the nearby resort town of Saint Andrews.

Situated in Caithness, New Brunswick, where the Magaguadavic River meets the Passamaquoddy Bay on the Bay of Fundy. Once owned by high profile Saint Andrews-By-The-Sea resident, Robert Pagan, the property, like other properties in the area, was granted to American Loyalist Soldiers of Scottish Highlanders, and named for Caithness, Scotland, the place where Golf began. When the US Revolutionary War ended, the King of Holland was chosen to define the boundary between the United States and Canada. He chose the “St Croix River”. The problem was, nobody knew where the St Croix River was. That name had been used by the French, but had not been used in a very long time. Canadians believed the Schoduc River was the St Croix. American’s believe the Wolastoq River (now called the St John River) was the St Croix River. The local North American Indigenous people (the MicMacs or Mi'kmaqs) told Robert Pagan of a place called “Bone Island” where their history told of Europeans living and dying there. Pagan did an archaeological dig on “Bone Island” and found the remains of the French colonists and their settlement. This proved “Bone Island”, also known as “Dochet Island” or “Saint Croix Island", was the site of Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts' ill-fated 1604 settlement. Based on this, the Boundary Commission agreed that the Schoduc River was the Saint Croix River and therefore, the international boundary between Canada and America. The survivors of the 1604/1605 fall/winter moved from St Croix Island to Port-Royal in Nova Scotia (two years before the European arrival in Jamestown, Virginia, the earliest continuously occupied European settlement in the USA). Without the work of Robert Pagan, this campsite and half of New Brunswick, including the Capital City of Fredericton and half of the City of Saint John would have been part of Province of Massachusetts Bay (later Maine). In the 1800's this property was part of a 1000 acre lot of land owned by two McKenzie brothers, Sea Captains. Since the late 1960s, the property was the summer home of Ben and Marg Leland, parents to 14 children and 50 grandchildren. Today, there are four (4) separate fields available for campers - Barnes' Point, Charlies Garden, the Villa Point and the Main Beach. The property has 2 miles of shoreline and several beaches to enjoy. The property even has a private island, Blueberry Island. A really unique and quiet place to stay. Learn more about this land: Natural long grass fields for camping, some mowed mid-season. There are several shale beaches on the tidal salt water. There is also access to the Fresh Water of the Magaguadavic River. Kayakers looking for more of a challenge may choose to paddle the Salt Waters of the Passamaquoddy Bay past Midjik Bluff. Those looking for calmer and warmer waters, may want to choose to go from the campsite, up the Magaguadavic River to the beautiful Saint George Basin and the Saint George Gorge, passing the Three Sisters and the newest Bald Eagles Nest (at the most eastern end of the Campsite). Pass by Silver Island arriving at the Saint George Basin. Disembark at the Basin Boat Ramp and take a short walk up Portage Street to Main Street. Enjoy an ice cream at Pete’s Dairy Bar. Also a short walk to the Saint George Mall, the Historic Granite Post Officer, the Saint George Dam, Fish Ladder, the Old Pulp Mill, the Country Market, and more. View PEI’s spectacular Confederation Bridge from the shoreline and take a drive to PEI which is only minutes from us. An expedition sea kayaker and expert rock climber, with more than 25 years experience giving clients a unique look at our province, it's my pleasure to introduce you to favourite spots. We also own an off-grid camping area 45 minutes south close to Fundy Trail Provincial Park and have made a hiking trail to an epic location which I have been developing for rock climbing over 10 years. Pull a kayak to the river in ten minutes or try a loop trail around the property on a fat bike. You could easily fill a weekend here with outdoor activities and make memories you'll never forget. Wake up listening to the birds in this birdwatchers paradise. There is plenty wildlife with deer everywhere, turtles in the pond and all the common critters, and we have not found any ticks. Hiking our maintained trails are a pleasure. Whenever we say we live in Jemseg the response is always, "It's beautiful there."

The Mouth of the Magaguadavic campsite is truly one of a kind. Our site was right on the cliff’s edge overlooking the river with Bald Eagles and Ospreys soaring overhead as Loons called from the water every evening and morning. It was magical! Our fire pit was ringed with bursting blueberry bushes and there were plenty of places to set up a hammock. It was rustic, with the basic outline of a trail through the woods, mostly having to bushwhack your way through the birch, mushrooms and pines that lead to a massive eagle’s nest. You can also take the river route at low tide and save yourself the woods walk. But honestly, that’s part of the adventure! It felt like you were truly living in the land. Hardly touched by human kind. Lots of wild grasses and flowers growing along the edges of the field and road in. We even saw a dulse boatman hauling in a load of seaweed one morning! We took kayaks up the river to the St. George falls and saw sooo many eagles and osprey! Would love to come back again one day soon! Thank you Paul for a wonderful experience!

I had a fantastic time camping on Brad’s land! The river is gorgeous, and I really felt immersed in nature. I came mainly to fish and was able to spend plenty of quiet time out on the water. Paul is a wonderful host, so welcoming and accommodating. He has no shortage of ideas and recommendation about things to do do/see/eat in the area. He'll even throw in a bit of history, if you're interested. The property is huge, with many different campsites overlooking a gorgeous bay. The house has a guest area with a clean bathroom, shower, and washer/dryer for guests. As for the sites, they're spread around the property on nice flats with beautiful views, the sea air is fresh and crisp, the breeze keeps the bugs away, it's quiet, feels safe and private even when other campers are on site, and the stars shine brightly at night. It's a great spot we'll definitely visit again.

Alex was a great host! The property was beautiful and very private. With minor instructions from the host the property is very easy to find. It has all of the basic amenities with some additional things provided like a propane stove, barbecue, kayaks and canoe. The water access is very easy and has a nice small dock and raft near by. It is the perfect night getaway for myself and my partner.

Not much has changed here since the 1800's. Feel the homesteading experience.

J'ai eu le privilège d'y séjourner et ce fut un coup de cœur un coup de coeur pour moi. L'emplacement où j'étais, sur la péninsule, est tout simplement magnifique, avec une vue imprenable sur la rivière et un accès facile à la mise à l'eau de mon kayak. J'ai passé deux journées à explorer les rives et les îlots qui se dessinent au rythme des marées. Le site est paisible, pittoresque et en pleine nature. Au fil de mes sorties, j'ai eu la chance d'observer un aigle à tête blanche, un phoque, des escarpements et un vieu bateau de pêche, ce qui a rendu chacune de mes sortie en kayak fort intéressante . Paul est un hôte cinq étoiles : accueillant, attentionné et toujours prêt à partager d'excellentes recommandations pour découvrir la région. Avant mon arrivée, pendant mon séjour et même après mon départ, il m'a suggéré de nombreux arrêts et points d'intérêt adapté a ce que je cherchai, et à mon itinéraire. J'ai également beaucoup apprécié les petites attentions qui ont rendu mon séjour encore plus agréable. J'ai pu acheter sur place des œufs frais et de la dulse récoltée localement. J'ai aussi eu accès à remplir mon réservoir d'eau ainsi qu'à une prise électrique pour recharger ma station d'alimentation portable quand tout deux on été vide. Je recommande cet endroit sans hésitation à tous ceux qui recherchent un séjour authentique et paisible, avec un hôte accueillant, discret et profondément dévoué.
