Doug and Brenda are retired from teaching at nearby public schools. Our Farm is now dedicated to boarding retired horses for their owners. Feel free to review the Selby Farm Horse Retirement webpage if you are a horse fan. We encourage you to visit our business website where you will see more farm pictures, videos, and where you will learn more about us. We practice rotational grazing for the health of the horses and the health of our pastures. The horses live in a herd as they would in the wild. Basically, they are hanging out with their friends! They also get regular care and feed and so are VERY happy. You will see and probably interact with the horses if you wish. They are guaranteed to come closer if you have treats like carrots and apples slices. Our quiet county road used to be the main road along the river. A hundred years ago it was called "Shanty Road". The shacks that were along it housed workers that harvested food from farms in the river bottom. The only evidence of those shacks now is perrenial flowers growing in unusual places. The area is inhabited by professionals working in nearby towns and cities. In fact there are only five homes along our 1.5 mile section of Copps Chapel Road. The native Americans who used this area did so because of the great diversity of wildlife and availability of water. Also the view is amazing in all directions. Was using this ridge top encampment for security, or just because the view is so satisfying? The Missouri River is on the far side of the bottoms now, but has been very close historically. There is also a large spring flowing from a cave nearby. Witness the flint chips when you walk through our barn lot. You are likely to see a broken stone tool that once worked on by a native American. These river hills are composed of soils blown in from the end of the last ice age. Being near the river, erosion has cut down the surrounding area making the scenic topography associated with Missouri River valleys and river hills.

We enjoyed the tree house but if you are afraid of heights or don’t trust ladders this is not the place for you. There is plenty of space to hang hammocks. They provide fire wood, a table, a rope, and some other stuff

Doug was very generous and accomodating for our youth group! He taught the girls about astronomy, took them on a cave excursion and allowed them to help feed the horses. We had an amazing time. Would highly recommend!

Beautiful camping under the Big Oak
Spent a wonderful afternoon walking around the farm and camping out with a fire under the beautiful old white oak tree. Full moon and stars were amazing!

We loved it there! So pretty, especially at night with all the stars. The horses are beautiful & so happy, the one-eyed horse was our favorite. Great place to run & our dog loved it as well! Thank you.

The Big Oak Treehouse was awesome. There is very little light pollution so the moon, stars and clouds were magical. Got to meet all the horses at the retirement ranch which made it even more special. Can’t wait to go for an extended stay next month.

This place was AMAZING!! Such a beautiful property and Doug and Johnny were so friendly and accommodating! The dogs had a blast! The treehouse was super cool. Next time we will probably come without our dogs so we can spend more time in the treehouse. A nice, unique, peaceful getaway! We will definitely be back! 😁

Top Tier Site & Hosts
Directions were spot on. Doug greeted my daughter and I warmly when we arrived even after a last-mintue booking and gave us a rundown of the property and amenities at the site (Firewood was provided, potable water spigot, developed firepit, accelerant, washing station for dishes, nice outdoor chairs, picnic table, etc. Super well equipped). Getting in and parking was a breeze even in my large old truck, and ground was well manicured and level. The site itself was idyllic, the treehouse in the sturdy old oak has a great view over the lights of Columbia off to the east at sunset. Small pond, friendly farm dogs, restorative quiet of the countryside. Altogether great atmosphere and 10/10 stargazing, too. Doug kindly let my daughter pick fresh eggs from the chicken coop on the way out in the morning, sending us on our way with fresh breakfast and probably a core memory for my kid as well. The Selby Farm, Oak Treehouse site, and host were all so excellent, I almost hope that no one finds out about them so I can book about six more stays through the fall. Strongly recommend.

Doug and Brenda’s campsite was amazing! Their directions made it easy to find, and the campsite itself was very cool. Loved the treehouse especially. The hosts were very friendly, kind, and helpful, and it was great to get to know them and learn about the area. Would definitely recommend and would stay again!!

A Perfect Peaceful Getaway!
We had so much fun at the treehouse! The platform was spacious and fit our hammock perfectly. We ended up keeping our tent on the ground because we brought our dog but the hammock made for a perfect reading spot! Doug and Brenda were out of town for the weekend but the farm hand was amazing, super friendly, and very helpful! It was so fun to see the horses and chickens and learn about the farm. A perfect peaceful getaway!

Nice spot but room for improvement.
Beautiful location, friendly host and staff, beautiful horses. Easy roads to get in and out on. My only disappointment was RV spots are close together (maybe double the distance you get at a normal campground) and the portable toilet was pretty gross.

The site was clean and well kept. The hosts are super friendly but not overly in your business. We had a great time, and the kids loved seeing the animals. Highly recommend you stay here!

Doug and Brenda were wonderful. They were at the campsite to greet us with their little Penny. Doug made sure we had everything we needed to run our RV. Included was an informative and delightful UTV tour of their farm and local sites of interest. (Bring pants and hiking shoes if you’re interested in seeing a local cave! Pretty cool!) Overall a most enjoyable stay. Would highly recommend!

Doug and Brenda have a really special place! I brought my 10yo son and we quickly realized we were a little more scared of heights than we thought. We made our way up the tree anyway, and the views were worth the anxiety! We camped down low, beneath the big beautiful tree, built a fire, and listened to the bull frogs from the pond that’s close by! Perfect getaway for a night!

Awesome site
Although we got some weather the night we stayed and took on a little water due to the way we had set up for not expecting as heavy of weather it was a great site an a great time. The host an his farm hand are solid dudes that are willing to accommodate and help. The view from the hill is great. I in would definitely recommend this site to anyone.

The Big Oak Tree site was gorgeous!!! It is definitely on a working farm, but for us, that just added to our stay. We used the rope to hoist our things up to the top, set up our 2 person tent, and relaxed the rest of the evening. There was firewood at the site, along with gasoline, and a tote of miscellaneous items. Having access to a toilet and running water was great. The views from the tree were beautiful and I'm sure are even more stunning when the leaves are off all the trees. Watching the sunrise this morning was my favorite part. Our dog had an amazing time running off leash, as well. My kiddo even got to feed apples to the horses. I hope to make it back in the fall.

Peaceful and Beautiful Stay
We loved our stay at the farm, and my wife and daughters agree that this was the best of the many camp sites we've stayed at. Doug and his farm hand greeted us and were very friendly and helpful. The tree house and horses surrounding the site provided beautiful views throughout the whole stay. We will make a point to stay here whenever we're in the area or driving through!
