The property was named after the Basswood trees that grow there; and the access street, Interurban Road, is so named for the Interurban Railway that ran in its place from 1913 to 1933, linking Kansas City with St. Joseph to the north. Horse lines dug the spring-fed Lakes at Basswood in the early 1930s, and the facilities functioned as a private fish hatchery from 1935 to 1945. Each lake was then stocked with a different type of fish. In 1979, former owners, Don and Betty Soper (thinking that Basswood would be their retirement home), purchased the property, then run-down and overgrown. The Sopers, who had previously owned two motels and an RV park, decided that retirement was still a long way off. Betty Soper, a history buff was excited about the idea transforming the property into a charming bed and breakfast inn, integrating the seclusion enjoyed by celebrities in days gone by with the Missouri friendliness that is appreciated by visitors today. On the other hand, Don Soper, quickly whittled out a large section of the estate for his own vision, that of a modern RV resort. They spent the next eight years restoring the lakes and 73 acres to the enchanting vacation spot it is today. The result, according to PEAK, “is a sampler of the best of Missouri country life: authentic, truly comfortable, unpretentious, but with every modern convenience.” Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee, President Truman was a frequent visitor to Basswood as was Charley “O” Finley, the owner of the Kansas City A’s (later the Oakland A’s) and our most recent celebrity being Matthew McConaughey.

Fraud account…
Ruined Fathers Day weekend. Made reservation many days in advance. Jennifer wrote to confirm my camper size and that was the last I heard from her. I sent 3 inquiries about what site and how do we check in. Her logo was the resort logo so I thought it was just connected with them. My husband got there ahead of me. NO RESERVATION. They would not let him check in, they found no connection to this and their reservation system, and the lady checking him in refused to call a manager, they didn’t know how to handle it. After much hassle they put him on the smallest lest amount of “dirt/weed/rocks” area until they figured it out. I showed up the next day, the lady checking people in and out was so rude. Despite this not being her fault she did not choose to be kind about the debacle that Jennifer put us in. Again refused to call a manager to help figure out what she could do despite the campground having cleared out that Sunday at noon check out. Long story short. The campground itself never heard of this person, had no idea what we were talking about and our confirmed reservation made no difference because it wasn’t in their system. This account is a fraud and they do not connect to the resort, do not respond to confirmed reservation inquiries.

38’ RV w 2 pups and a 3 year old
Easy check in. Easily marked sites. A big close together but thankfully we didn’t have anyone on our left or right. Clean bath house, good pizza, and a lot of family activities even this early in the spring.

Got a taste - will be back!
Really enjoyed our first time at Basswood thanks to HipCamp. This resort had not come up on our radar before, so was a pleasant surprise to come in for several days and see what a great spread they had. Super friendly and helpful staff & maintenance crew - took care of all our needs. Hope to be back for some hiking/fishing when the temps aren't quite to frigid. Thx!
