Originally part of a plantation that got split up among the children and eventually became a home for outlaws and their loot, the theft ring was broken up by the law and the property sold and turned into a therapy ranch for hurting, abused, and handicapped youth. The ranch eventually closed and the property has now transitioned into Beacon Farm, a non profit growing food for the local food pantries and soup kitchens. The 20 acres situated along the Bluffwoods Conservations land and Warnicky Hooller (Warnicks Rd) where Jessi James and his gang lived and hid out. Most of the land is wooded with walking paths and access to the trails in the conservation land with a small portion pasture land and gardens. Find a place in a meadow to star gaze and watch the moon, or hike into the woods for a secluded camping experience. Beautiful rolling hills, wildlife, wild flowers, peace and quiet are just a few of the perks in this rare location next to the Bluffwoods Conservation Area. Be prepared to get your hands dirty with this listing. All campers get to volunteer one hour per day while staying at Beacon Farm. We are a nonprofit growing food for those in need. Donating 100's of pounds of food to our local food pantries and soup kitchens. Your hour of volunteer time each day could consist of harvesting veggies, weeding, stacking wood, milking goats, or any number of other things, depending on the time of year you are here. We loved camping at Beacon Farm. It was a beautiful get away and they provided free firewood...Cheri and Kevin went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and at home. We loved helping plant garlic, feeding the animals, and milking the goat. Great getaway. We will be returning for sure!

I loved camping here! I only stayed for a night but it was well worth it. The hosts greeted me and showed me where everything was and were very nice. I liked passing by and seeing all the animals and food they grow. My site was a bit of a walk to get to but I didn’t mind having to lug my stuff- it was perfectly secluded in the woods and the surrounding area was beautiful. There is access to water and an outhouse, I was also given plenty of firewood! There are also trails and a overlook swing to enjoy, overall would stay again!

Calming Campsite

I camped with a friend and her dog for one night at Beacon's and it was a wonderful experience! They were incredibly accommodating and let us check-in at midnight due to a long drive we had that day. They walked us to our site, explained the amenities, and even pointed out a hiking trail for the morning if we were interested. There was fire wood and a fire pit available at our private site. In the morning we picked some green beans with our host and had delightful a conversation about the property. I would note that the host's are very religious if that is not your cup-of-tea then this isn't the camping site for you. They were incredibly kind and respectful throughout our stay and I would definitely camp there again if I am every in the area.

Camping. With animals?

Tent camping was great here! There is a little trail that was super cute and the camping spot was secluded just enough. The best part was helping with the farm. They were so sweet and we had so much fun!

Me and my dog

First time here and we definitely be back. Super quiet and peaceful, I spent two nights. Walked the trails and enjoyed the bench in the woods. Everything was so green and beautiful. Didn’t use the outhouse as I am self contained. Was able to read a book and a half and just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Camping under the stars!

We brought in our small camper, it was gorgeous and had a lot of valleys. The hosts were very kind and welcoming. We started to walk to see the farm animals and they invited our kids (animal lovers!) to go see the a couple day old goats, help collect the chicken’s eggs and say hi to all the doggies that live on the farm. They were all so sweet. The outhouse was a nice addition and the hosts even stacked dried logs for our fire. We would definitely recommend this space to anyone. There is a small hiking/walking loop right near the sites! We lucked out to have a clear night so the stargazing was lovely. Thanks for such a great stay! We’d love to see the space in a bit warmer times to help with the vegetables and see it in all its glory!

We were scheduled to arrive at 5pm and got turned around and weren't able to arrive until 6pm. Cheri and Kevin were still overly accommodating, despite having prior engagements of their own. Unfortunately we didnt get a chance to meet Kevin but our brief conversation with Cheri provided some cool facts and history about the farm/ farm land. We loved the idea behind the farm and would definitely go again if in the area or passing by. 10 out of 10 would recommend.

It’s a nice place

It was a very nice place to stay. But it is not a place for big trucks and RVS that are large like my 30 foot it’s really narrow trying to get in and the tree branches did quite a bit of damage to the RV and truck. The only thing I really had a hard time with is having to open and close the gate every time we left or came back, mostly because it was cold out side. People are friendly and kind. If I had a pop up camper or tents, I would stay here they have a bathroom and portable water so that is nice and the price isn’t to bad.

A perfect rural gem!

What a great little gem. Two of my friends and I were on a motorcycle ride this weekend stayed at Beacon’s Camping for a Cause. The owners were super friendly and their place was beautiful! I’ve already talked to my wife about going back and camping there.

My campsite of choice, a local KC g

I think I qualify as a "regular" now... Beacon is my go-to getaway for camping. I have had all of the variety experiences here: a solo trip with a peaceful campfire to myself, a group trip and a gaggle of fun people, including the host(s) enjoying fireside chats, helping in the garden or milking goats, and my recent trip was just me and the hosts enjoying good fellowship and marshmallows. This is a safe, peaceful place, complete with a lovely trail to a little waterfall and swing. A great place to sit under the stars, read a good book, share in spiritual conversation, or have some thinking room. Thankful for this gift of a place!

Lush, green, private, gorgeous land

The spot we had was perfect! Surrounded by all of natures beauty, in a lush green forest. It's very private, quiet and lovely. Even the drive into the farm was gorgeous. Our family enjoyed our time spent here and would recommend 10/10.

A nice reprieve off the road

What a fabulous little spot hidden in the Missouri bluffs outside St. Joseph! These folks are good hearted doing good things for their community and one should feel blessed to be a part of this experience. I wish I'd more time to walk the trails on the surrounding acreage... and if I didn't have to leave so quickly the next morning, breakfast by the campfire watching the clouds break would have been perfect. The compost toilet is super clean and the water from the spigot tastes great and both amenities are close by. Pack it in, pack it out.

Beautiful location & couple

Beacons farm is fabulous! The scenery. The hiking paths. The people. The animals. All of it was amazing! Upon arrival, I was invited to meet some baby goats and shown to my campsite. They were kind enough to supply firewood (though it was a rainy evening). The compost toilet was much better than expected and the gardens were beautiful. Being able to help out on the land was the highlight of my stay as well as speaking with the lovely couple. I’d definitely stay here again!

My 8 yr old granddaughter and I had a wonderful 24 hr stay together. Beacon Farm is always a delight! She enjoyed the baby goats, lambs, swinging on a grapevine down the gravel road, collecting acorns to create a family, and our hike through the woods to discover all the wildflowers and budding trees.
