In the heart of Grant Wood Country in Jones County, Iowa, The Barnyard is an eccentric art installation space created from found, recycled, and re-purposed building materials. Gothic and rustic, the space provides multiple camp sites for easy access to bike trails through town and into the Wapsipinicon park across the river from the property. Kayak the Wapsi (we recommend a Matsell Bridge put in with a stop at the historic General Store in Stone City) and end only a mile a way from your campsite at the Barnyard in Anamosa at the dam takeout. Visit the State Penitentiary museum, hang out with the Barnyard chickens, hike our wooded trails, or simply unwind. This place is a magical retreat unlike anywhere else in the world.
Note: Our walking trails were hit pretty hard after the August 2020 Derecho (hurricane force winds for 40 minutes solid) but we are working endlessly to get them cleared; the walk to the river is accessible to visitors.
We have recently built a wood-fired pizza oven! We can now host parties of six or more with a pizza gathering during your stay; inquire upon booking about availability and pricing. You will not be disappointed, pizza in the outdoor oven is amazing every time!

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Great place to camp! The hosts are amazing. They gave us a cool tour down to the river! It’s far enough from town to feel private and disconnected yet close enough to go grab anything you forgot at the store! Very relaxing! Can’t wait to go back.
Good for the soul!
What an incredible place!
I needed to get away for a weekend and this was a great spot with lots of privacy but yet my interactions with Xene and Bob were so pleasent and they really make you feel at home. It was last minute and they were so quick to respond. I car camped and hung my hammock.
Tip: watch your pup, mine got a fancy hair cut when we got home as he had a lot of tiny burrs because he had to explore the bushes :)
I can't wait to go back, I know you'll enjoy it too!
We are new to this method of 'camping". As many hipcamp sites are small and tucked out of the way, we will review directions via satellite photo in the future. Using given directions, we took a wrong turn ( arrived after dark) at the last minute. Directions need to be clarified or entrance flagged. We barely interacted with Xene, but she is responsive and kind. Promised firewood needs shelter so it is dry and usable. Setting is pleasant.
The coolest place ever!!!
There are not words to describe how magical my experience camping here was. I'm fairly certain that Xene and Bob are literally the most kind, talented and laid back people on the planet. When arriving I knew this was a special place... They're both so graciously share their beautiful property, art and vibes... I swear even the water is magical!!! Please take the time to stay here I promise you will fall in love. Who knew Iowa was so Rad!
This was my first Hipcamp stay, and I chose it for the handy location to stop for the night. But, it's really a fun location with lots of space, nice amenities, and Xene and Bob are great. I've already been talking up this place to friends, and will keep it in mind for a future destination (not just a stopover).
We had a wonderful weekend on Xene’s property! The weather was perfect and her location is gorgeous- rolling hills, wooded areas, and a perfect campsite for our group of 6. The art installations sprinkled about the property (and lit up at night!) are quirky and fun. It definitely adds to the charm. The stars were in full view at night and we enjoyed hearing the katydids and owl. We had the place to ourselves but there were plenty of campsites and outhouses to accommodate several groups without it affecting the secluded feel. It was truly and ideal weekend- 30 min from our home in Cedar Rapids, just on the edge of Anamosa if you need ice or emergency ketchup, and 20 min from Central Lake county park with a beach and entry for kayaks. SO FUN! It’s hard to imagine we won’t be back.
Our visit to n*Everland was a very relaxing and interesting experience. Bob, Xene and their lil' black dog welcomed us warmly, made sure we were comfortably settled into our camp site and invited us to explore their property. We enjoyed the many creative sculptures, the views of the rolling hills and a little hike down to the river. The views of the stars (meteor shower!) was wonderful! Check out this unique spot!
We enjoyed or stay here, it was only one night but could have easily spend an entire day roaming around looking at the artwork and collection of stuff.
Xene & Bob were very friendly and welcoming, Bob gave us a tour of his big barn, very impressed with what they have done here and what they have planned.
