Pitch your tent in one of four widely spaced sites. Each site has enough room for multiple tents and includes a fire pit and picnic table.

The sites are just a short walk from our shower/restroom facility. The fishing ponds are just a quarter mile walk from the campsites, and access to the numerous trails throughout our 940-acre property is directly from the campsites.

While we have four designated sites, it is rare for all to be full, and likely that you'll be the only campers here most days.

We are located in a very remote/rural part of Illinois in a county nestled between the Mississippi & Illinois Rivers, but only 75 miles north of downtown St. Louis. We have been included in John Shirle's "The Best in Tent Camping: Illinois."

We unfortunately were not able to fully enjoy McCully because it rained almost the whole time we were there. We were able to hike a little and there is a nice pond. The bathrooms were clean. They left us a cart to bring our stuff to the site which was very nice and saved us from hauling a heavy cooler among other things. I would recommend this place if you want a truly quite and secluded camping experience.

Sadly we were unable to stay here after booking due to heavy flooding.

The communication with Mcully was fantasic, we were asked if we could change sites after we booked as the site we requested was booked and they were very quick to respond with a remedy to that situation. We were also given very clear directions and also warned we would need to cart our gear over to avoid getting our car stuck due to the rain, which I am highly greatful for as i would be the type to push my luck.

But sadly, when we got there, we quickly realized why the car would get stuck and i wouldnt even question to not go across. There is a stream going directly across the path to get to the campsites that was completly flooded out to the point we werent sure it was even safe to cross with how strong the current was. There was a cart provided, but i dont believe it would have made it sadly.

We did make it across eventually to scope things out but only with the help of 1 of our dogs jumping in to test the waters. We thought about staying if the rain did receed, but the firepit was very flooded in all 4 sites we found. Site 4, the one we requested, seemed to be the highest up, but still had water flowing through it draining to the stream. Our site, site 2, was closest to the entrance and the firepit was in pond that probably wouldnt dry out til long after we were meant to leave.

I wanted to text Mcully, but sadly had no reception until i was about 30 minutes away and at that point had decided to go home. No fault to them, just worth mentioning that we had no reception, myself on TMobile network and my boyfriend on Sprint.

Overall, the hiking at this location seems very nice from the little bit we did do in the rain and one of my dogs really enjoyed splashing in the stream. The bathrooms and showers are visible from the sites and just a short walk away. All 4 sites have a fire pit and a picnic table. Sadly, i only saw one place to put a hammock, im not sure if it was too far apart though.

I believe without the rain, this could be a very very nice site. The accessibly to water and bathrooms is great, there seems to be quite a lot of trails, and the site are large enough for multiple tents if you wanted too, though are not private from each other. There is also wood provided for fire pits which is great. Overall, just not what we were after, but im confident there are people who are after this. We probably wont be back to camp because were looking for more secluded, but ill be happy to recommend to anyone who is looking for a site like this!!! If in the area, i would high consider going hiking here.

I chose not to get a refund as I am happy that the money is going to a non profit to help the site.

Site 2 firepit completely flooded out with site 3 in background.Flooding where you cross to the sites. Taken from Site 2 facing toward where my car was parked.

bathrooms lived up to the glowing reviews. I was happy I opted for site 4 - a lot of recent rain left the other 3 sites (in a row next to a tiny stream) kinda swampy., site 4 was up a little rise, offering dry toes and (had there been guests at the other sites) additional privacy.

sadly we got in late and had to push on the next morning, so were nbot able to assess the hiking trails. no actual mccullly made him or herself known to us - one of our favorite hipcamp features is chatting with the host.

luckily we ran into a couple who recently bought one of the stilt houses that line the river side of the road in nearby kampsville. the husband was from the area, so we had a nice chat. pro tip: if you arte headed west, get everything you need at an exit BEFORE 100S. several bars on the road down, but no real grocery or place to get stuff. also, the area is pretty solid red ideologically. not a big deal for camping, but keep it in mind.

Overall, a nice little spot, especially if you have time to spend a few days.

Response from McCully, the Host, on July 8th, 2021

We are very rural, but there is a small grocery, gas station. dollar store and a number of fruit and veggies stands about 9 miles south on Hwy 100.

What an adorable place! Really spacious campgrounds that weren't too close together. Beautiful area and friendly host. Got to see many animals, even a cute little baby skunk! Showers were spacious and bathroom very clean.

Nice quiet place. Off the beaten trail. Has very clean and nice bath and shower house. Depending on you vehicle and the weather you may have to walk in to your site, no too far though. Great wildlife and trails. Not suitable for rv, tents only
