Super private, beautiful…..do it!
Perfect for a weekend camping trip. Matt and his wife are an awesome easy going couple and have done an awesome job with the property. My party and I stayed at the covered canopy area with the huge beach area and loved it. We definitely plan on coming back again when it’s warmer so we can enjoy swimming in the stream. If you love looking at the stars at night, this is an awesome spot if you catch a clear night like we were fortunate to have. The canoe ride was great and easy to paddle upstream on the canal starting from Lock 7 to get to the next where you just turn around and slowly float back down. Beautiful time of year and well worth it. Walking along the canal for a little hike was cool too. If you got young kids like me and my family do, this is perfect. THANKS MATT!
What a gem this place is! Secluded, river front camping with miles of trails and lots of wildlife. We were there on a Sunday/Monday and had the entire place to ourselves. Matt is a gracious host and really wants his guests to enjoy themselves. We will definitely be going back!
Much needed retreat
A favorite for our dogs and us! Cute town nearby, amazing scenery, miles of the canal path immediately accessible. The hosts are easy down-to-earth people, which simply adds to the experience. Lots of quiet. Open space for the dogs to explore. Pretty great rain or shine!
Matt has a great spot here, & he's very helpful, & responsive. My husband Kevin & I absolutely love Camp Hennepin. Our favorite spot is by the beach the shelter offers a great spot to set up cooking facilities. There are porta potties that are well maintained on-site. We do bring a camp toilet so we don't have to drive over to them from the beach. There's a charcoal grill that's available to use provided you bring your own charcoal. We set up our tent with a view of the stream, and enjoy listing to the crickets and other wildlife at night. I love fishing the Hennepin canal. The sites are very relaxing, just the thing one needs to get away from the daily grind and a great way to destress and take your mind off Covid. We've camped here twice now and are planning another trip or two soon. It's remote enough to be away from others while close enough to civilization if any supplies are needed. We did filter water from the stream for cleaning and showering and in our camp toilet. We bring a water jug with water for drinking and cooking with.
The campsite was excellent! We camped on the beach along the river and the sounds of it flowing at night was wonderful. Matt was incredibly helpful at getting us to camp, delivering the wood we added with our hipcamp booking and giving us tips to get the canoes into the canal. Would definitely go back!!
Where heaven meets the hennepin
Camp Hennepin is fantastic! Clean & serene, peaceful & tranquil. With the Hennepin Canal running along one side of the property, and a small river running along the other side, this is the perfect escape to nature.
With access to both waters directly from the campground, you can hike or bike along the canal path, canoe/kayak in the canal, or wade in the river.
Ice, refreshments, etc is just a few minutes drive away in the beautiful and friendly little town of Tiskilwa.
Host Matt is friendly and professional, and maintains the cleanest port-a-potties I’ve ever seen!
Great secluded spot!
Matt has a great spot in between Big Bureau Creek and the Hennepin Canal near Lock 7. Wonderful opportunity to bring your bikes and ride forever (gravel). The locks on the canal are really cool to check out as well.
You can keep to his main flat and level gravel area if you have a big rig, or go deeper into his land with a smaller car and tent. There's a great rocky beach at the far end of his land -- this is really the best spot he's got.
My elementary school-aged boys loved playing on a huge gravel pile! So much for nature ;-)
Lots of neat wildlife. We saw a deer drinking from the creek; what must have been a heron (?); and what I'm guessing were three enormous catfish just swimming in circles in the late afternoon.
The bugs weren't all that bad. The stars were spectacular - with the Milky Way making a strong showing.
We highly recommend!
The pictures do not give this campsite justice to how amazing it is. We set up our tent just a few feet from the creek/river and had so much fun wadding in the water all day. Matt dropped off firewood right next to our fire pit and checked in on us the next day to see if we needed more. You may hear a train in the distance once a day but you will also hear a beavers tail splashing in the river, birds, frogs, and all the other wonderful sounds of nature. Whenever I have another break from school I will definitely be camping here again.
