A place where neighbors are welcoming and life is sweet as the smell of sugar cane grass. You'll enjoy the wonderful ocean view and many fruit and macadamia nut trees on the property. We enjoy the best weather on the island- not hot like Kona, not rainy like Hilo, not cold like Waimea… just perfect!! It’s also a central location for exploring the Hilo and Kona sides of the island. Just 10 minutes away is the lovely town of Honokaʻa, with farmers markets, antique shops, restaurants, and the coolest old movie theater in the world.
Our three guest rooms are simple, yet nicely decorated, clean, with great beds. Guests share a bathroom, outdoor patio and living room with high speed Wi-Fi, couches, cable TV, microwave, coffee maker, refrigerator, and grill. Guests may also pick ripe fruit from the yard, when in season. (Tangerines, macadamia nuts, guava, avocados, bananas…) Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Asia, Australia and beyond.
The Waipʻo Lodge Lehua Room is a cute room with a Queen size bed. Itʻs also equipped with a sink with hot and cold water. The house itself is an authentic “plantation home” built in 1922 and oozing with character. These walls have stories to tell! My wife and I live upstairs with our 3 children as your hosts. So the disclaimer is: if you are not looking for total quiet and enjoy interacting with other travelers in the simple beauty of the Hamakua Coast, this is your place.
We run an outdoor education program for teenagers (Hawaii Outdoors Institute) and are very knowledgeable about hiking in Waipi’o, Waimanu and other outdoor adventures. Many people use the hostel as a launching point for hiking trips.

Gregs place was great. Very beautiful and well designed space. Its definitely an older building, so be prepared for a rustic stay. I was a little shocked at first by the frogs in the bathroom, but totally got used to them. I would stay here again. Great ammenities and a beautiful ocean view, highly recommend!
Great alternative to hotel
Great alternative to staying here instead of a hotel. Greg does his best at making you feel welcomed. Comfortable bed and plenty of room in bedroom with its own desk and sink. You share bathroom equipped with shower, sink and living room & full equipped outdoor kitchen where you can meet with other guests. Fresh fruit from his tree was an added benefit
Great spot! Perfect convenient location next to the valley, with a nice view out to the pacific. Macadamia nuts and mandarins a’plenty if you’re there at the right time. Host is nice and has a few fun little kids.
A beautiful place with tons of charme in great surroundings! We loved the outdoor kitchen and that we could help ourselves to some fruit in the garden. Greg greeted us on our arrival and was around to answer questions. The room was beautifully decorated, the bed super comfy. The only - and really only - drawback was that the house is quite old (hence, charming!) and therefore not soundproof, so you can hear the family upstairs sometimes quite a bit.
Full disclosure, I work in the tourism field with small operators:
Greg has a great gig going for him. The whole place is visually pleasing to the eye. Nice coffee cups to nice towels.
Where I found it failed was the noise level coming from upstairs. There is no sound insulation between rooms or even worse between upstairs and the basement rooms are. I would say a few minor adjustments are in order to making this a 5/5 versus a 3/5. Furthermore, checking in with guests to see if they had questions or any needs would be very helpful.
All in all, you can’t go wrong with booking here if you bring ear plugs and realize it is a 3 bedroom basement suite with a shared bathroom.
Cozy & clean in countryside setting
Was a great cozy spot for us! I loved the back yard with the ocean view. Greg allowed us to harvest some avocados, macadamia nuts and citrus. We would have liked to stay longer if time permitted. It has a hostel vibe where you can connect with other travelers. Only downside was that one of the roomies' alarms kept going off every 5 minutes at 5am! Comes with the hostel vibe, I guess. All in all, it was a lovely experience. Thanks Greg for all your hospitality!
