Enjoy the country life in Kau on the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place).  Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there, but you don’t need 4WD to get to our place, just go slow the road is gravel and bumpy.

Off the grid. Rustic, but fun.  If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot!

We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided. We are only renting one cabin at a time during the pandemic, so you won't be sharing the campground with others.

The silence is golden and the stars are amazing.

Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping.

Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires!

It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road.  We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things.

The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water.

Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious!

This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. So we have kerosene lamps for back up and you can charge your phone. No wifi. I use AT&T, and I hear T-Mobile works good, Verizon OK.

The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing!

Fantastic private and secluded spot. We came with a regular car and the road wasn't too bad - just be slow and if you see a big rock, move it, or go around it! Kitchen is well stocked and the bathroom is quite amazing for something off-grid. Was a lovely start to our Hawaii trip!

We had a wonderful stay at Road to the Sea. The cabin was comfortable and private. The kitchenette had all the basics and then some. We stayed for 7 days using this as a base camp and exploring every day. It is a little remote and not close to any major attraction but that is one of its attractions. There is a nearby grocery store and Ace hardware. The road in is rough volcanic rock so take it SLOW! The flush bathroom toilet and hot water shower were fantastic after a day snorkeling at the beach. Our only regret is we did not get to meet Debbie or Dave. They were in Alaska! But Debbie was always available by text and she answered all our questions.

The gate is easy to find but the rough road seems awfully long. Especially the first time. Our cabin. We stayed for 7 nights and really enjoyed it here. Our cabin is on the right. We could park right next to it. King size bed, couch and easy chairs. Small table. Lots of screens for breezes but very private.

Super cute camp with several cute cabins. Great view of the sea in contrast to the dark lava field. Quiet, clean, and secluded.

Loved this place! The hot shower was a real treat halfway through camping across the whole island. We ran down to the green and black sand beaches from the property (about 5 miles each way to see both beaches). Had them all to ourselves. Hosts were super friendly, gave us great recommendations of things to do, and the bamboo hut and bathroom were really clean and quaint. Things are still under construction a bit on other parts of the property. The road to the property is passable with 2WD, but we took it VERY slowly! Overall a great find and we would definitely stay again.

We enjoyed our stay, but going down the road to the sea was tough. you definitely hit bottom more than once and felt the car scraping along some rocks. This was a Mazda hatchback fully loaded with three people and lots of luggage. People traveling lighter might have an easier time.

For us on our two night visit it meant that once we arrived we didn't want to get back in our car and drive up the road to do day trips or sightseeing or buy more food or water. We did pretty well with the food and water we had on hand. But I recommend stopping to get all the food and water you need before you go down that road the first time in case like us you don't feel comfortable driving up and down at multiple times. It was a very restful stay, with a unique landscape, so much sky! been watching the sunset into the ocean from high up was great.
The place had a peaceful feeling. And I love the small coffee table book called What is this thing called Aloha. Aside from a mile but of anxiety about feeling stuck, we had a great time. We probably could have asked for help getting rides or food, but we were able to managed on our own.

On our drive up the road, we took turns from walking around so there was a little less weight in the car, and I think we scrape less. The cabins were lovely, as was the bathroom. If covid is still happening and you have more people than fit in one cabin contact Debbie, she can probably open up another cabin if you need more space. We also saw a neighbor with a pickaxe chiseling out some of the bigger bumps, so maybe it will be better by the time you get there:).

Debbie was so easy to communicate with. The cabin was really nice and very private off of a gravel road. Friendly dogs. I'd highly recommend. Thanks!
