Just 15 miles lie between Bristol and Gurt Yurt in Somerset’s Mendip Hills but, travel them and the distance might feel greater. Most of them whizz by as you drive south on the A38 but, soon enough, you find yourself on a country lane and then a rough road on the route of an ancient drover’s track. You’re slowing down but not quite to a stop. A quarter of a mile later is where you park your car and the last part of the journey is made on foot, down steps, through a sloping bluebell wood. When you emerge, you see where you’ll be staying: a secluded six-metre yurt, pitched on a platform with glorious valley views.

This is the northern edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But it’s not just what you see that makes this landscape special – it’s also what you can do. The limestone gorges and outcrops make it a place of action and adventure with caving and climbing among the many options. It’s as north as Somerset gets but so much of what the county is known for is within hiking or biking distance of here: Thatcher’s Cider Farm is a two-mile walk, Cheddar Gorge a six-mile ride. The Mendip Activity Centre, with its dry ski slope and climbing wall is less than a mile – as are no less than four recommended pubs.

But what of Gurt Yurt itself? This hillside hideaway sleeps up to four. It has proper beds, a kitchenette, a log-burning stove and a veranda to help you enjoy the valley view. It has its own composting loo and hot water shower just outside on a lower deck. And down on the ground, there’s a fire pit with seating. It’s tucked away in the four-acre grounds of host Tim’s house, which, elsewhere, has a few wild camping pitches. And despite the comfort of the yurt, that’s the vibe here: wild. It’s a place to listen to birdsong, have a campfire and generally enjoy the outdoors. If you need a hand doing that, Tim’s your man. He’ll transport your luggage to the yurt while you wander through the wood and he’s happy to help you light a fire. He can give you a run-down of climbing hotspots and local pubs, and knows all the right people from gliding guides to expert fly fishermen. But you may simply want to enjoy the blissful seclusion of this place – and it won’t take you long to find it.

Gurt Yurt
Superb
This was a lovely relaxing stay in a very comfortable and well appointed yurt. Looking over fields and woodland we were able to enjoy time for coffee, barbecued evening meals, and feel “chilled “ At the bottom of the hill are two pubs- the Crown with excellent range of beers and ciders (plus super lunches) and the Nelson, enormous roasts. Tim is a fine host, helpful, informative and non intrusive, someone who obviously cares for the land he lives on. Thoroughly recommended!

Gurt Yurt
Lovely rural spot.
We loved the yurt and if , during the hot spell, it got too hot we just went and lay in the hammock in the nearby woods. It was well equipped with everything we needed and direct access to many country walks - and good pubs.

Gurt Yurt
Dream getaway
We loved every minute of our stay in the yurt and would highly recommend it! Complementary prosecco and June on arrival and all the amenities you could ask for. Tim was a wealth of knowledge and went out of his way to make the experience as memorable as possible.

Gurt Yurt
The best mini break ever!
Our stay at Gurt Yurt was amazing. We had a 4 & 6 year old who loved. It is a back to nature experience with little luxuries to make it very special. Tim & Sara couldnt have been more accommodating. They responded to messages immediately and were very flexible. We were greeted, and luggage taken to the Yurt while we made our way down the magical steps. The Yurt is much larger than I thought and impeccably clean. There is a dining table to pull out to have a meal inside (this was great for the spot of rain we had) and to enjoy breakfast together. The lovely hot shower is fantastic and a very clean compost loo. The garden is huge, with a hammock, two tyre swings and a badminton net with rackets. We also played cricket! I would recommend pre-ordering a bbq – it was delicious. We were also given complimentary prosecco, apple juice and marshmallows to toast on the open fire which was a lovely touch. The whole place felt really secluded and private with loads of space for the kids to run around. Once we had put them to bed, we sat out and looked up at the stars which was so peaceful and relaxing. It was lovely to walk out in the morning to see the chickens roaming around. Tim kindly let the kids collect eggs and ride on the tractor which was a real highlight. The location is perfect with loads of lovely pubs around and lots of things to do.Tim and Sara cannot do enough and are on hand to help with anything. We stayed for two nights, and it really wasn’t long enough! I will be back

From the host
Off the beaten track on top of the Mendips in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A mixture of four acres of wild woodland, orchard and field set on a hillside. Our Yurt is set up in the trees giving you peaceful seclusion and a clear view across the sea to Wales and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. A huge range of activities are possible or you can lie in the hammock with a good book. We have very friendly dogs and rescue chickens who may come and visit. Wild deer wander past in the early morning mist and the odd buzzard picks an argument with a bunch of crows but nothing much else should disturb you.  We moved here after an 18 month search 8 years ago. It was close to everything we wanted and we've spent some time getting a bit closer.
Nearby attractions

There are footpaths and tracks straight from site ranging from the mile walk up to the nearby Dolebury Warren (once the site of an Iron Age Fort, now a nature reserve) to the six-mile hike to the dramatic Cheddar Gorge. Experienced climbers can walk to nearby limestone walls (ask Tim) and less experienced ones can head for the Mendip Activity Centre, less than a mile from Gurt Yurts, (01934 834877) where there’s also a dry ski slope and a whole host of other activities too. Tim will happily put you in touch with climbing and caving instructors or with a former world champion fly fisherman who can take you out on Chew Valley Lake to catch trout. The reservoir is less than 10 miles away and a location for sailing and other watersports too. About the same distance in the other direction (west) and you reach the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The traffic-free Strawberry Line cycle route passes close by and provides a route to Cheddar or to Yatton, where there’s a mainline station. The site is also just a 30-minute drive (15 miles) from Bristol.

Food and drink

Message your host before your stay to organise hampers of food sourced from within cycling distance of site; including breakfast and barbecue packs. There are several good pubs within walking distance. The closest is The Crown Inn (01934 852995), a traditional pub serving locally-sourced, homemade food just down the track. Beyond that, The Nelson Inn (01934 852315), serves good-value carvery dinners. In the other direction, it’s about a mile to The Star Inn (01934 842355) and The Swan Inn (0193 485 2371), both of which serve food. You can also walk to Thatchers Farm (01934 822862) for a tour and tasting at their cidery and there’s a café with and aprés-ski vibe at the Mendip Activity Centre, a mile from site. And, of course, you won’t want to miss the cheese from Cheddar.
