Overview

About

Cypress Hills Massacre National Historic Site of Canada is located about 2 km south of Fort Walsh National Historic Site of Canada in a broad valley bottom where American traders attacked a Nakoda camp. The rolling Prairies landscape is broken only by reconstructions of two former trading posts, Farwell’s and Solomon’s, involved in the massacre. The formal recognition refers to the associated landscape and archaeological remains surviving from the debacle on what is now Park’s Canada’s property, although the actual site of the massacre extends beyond these boundaries.

When to go

The best time to visit Cypress Hills Massacre National Historic Site is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall. The site's open landscapes are most accessible and the weather is conducive for exploration. Winter can be harsh, with heavy snowfall and cold temperatures, making some areas difficult to access.

Know before you go

  • Respect the historical significance and the solemn nature of the site; it is a place of remembrance and reflection.
  • Check the Parks Canada website for any seasonal closures or restrictions before planning your visit.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for walking through natural prairie terrain.
  • There are no camping facilities on-site, but nearby accommodations can be found in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.
  • Bring water and snacks, as there are limited services available at the historic site.
