Primitive camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Bordered by Wild Cattle Creek State Forest and neighbouring grazing properties, our farm is quite remote and secluded. We are located on the Eastern Dorrigo Plateau between Coffs Harbour and Dorrigo off the MR 120, a beautiful (windy) scenic drive. On the way to us, you will drive through the historic timber villages of Ulong and Timmsvale into the Wild Cattle Creek State Forest via a well graded gravel forestry road, to reach our gate, where we will meet you and guide you to your camp site. We are a working cattle property and run a big mob of mostly Angus cattle and practice Regenerative Agriculture. We are regenerating country that was clear felled in the mid 1800s and over grazed, into a thriving, future-proof farm for our 4 children and 2 grand children. Many trees are to be planted using the principles of Syntropic Agroforestry. The Little Nymboida River runs through the property and is home to the Muluny. (Gumbaynggirr for platypus) You may also encounter wallabies, bandicoots, cockatoos, goannas, snakes, eagles and a wide variety of bird and insect life. There are some glorious rapids and swimming holes for a dip or paddle (BYO kayak or float) but generally the river is shallow so perfect for kids to explore. We have 15 acres of regenerating bush that has walking tracks, perfect for forest bathing and getting back to nature in a completely safe way. The boundary is fenced so you cant get lost! The 100 acre side of the farm where you are camped, also has tracks to explore. We have a dedicated wildlife reserve on an adjacent hill and from there you may spot a Muluny in the deep corner bend, if you are really quiet. Homes can be seen in the distance but you really will have the feeling of being a million miles away from civilisation. Close by there is the opportunity to go waterfall chasing, swimming, kayaking, 4WDing, forest driving, bush walking or visit the small villages of Ulong and Lowanna for a meal or essential supplies and check out the historic Railway stations.Gundarang (Gunbaynggirr for Waterlily) Billabong is tucked away on a flat, open space adjacent to Wild Cattle Creek State Forest. It's fed by a seasonal spring and is suitable for a little paddle in your own craft but not really a good swimming spot. The camp site is easily accessed by 4WD and is completely private. 2WD would be OK if the weather has been fine. 4WD otherwise. Help is at hand if there is any trouble: we have tractors. This is a "leave no trace" site. There are no amenities so please bring everything you need to camp, including drinking water and toilet facilities. You must take all human waste and rubbish with you. Since it is so close to a water source, a pit or hole toilet is not permitted by environmental regulations. We keep the site area slashed and mulched, providing a good surface for tents or vehicles, large and small. The area is large enough for groups. We have provided a fire drum. Firewood can be ordered in advance under the extras tab at check out or BYO. Please be extremely vigilant with fire. You are beside a flammable grassy paddock and state forest. Light fires only in the drums provided. If the cattle are in this paddock during your stay we either can offer a different camp spot or can supply electric fencing around your site. Depends on your need for peace and quiet; cattle can be very curious and noisy, although quite entertaining as well. We can discuss this at check in. Our farm has walking tracks through natural bush, along the banks of the Little Nymboida River and slashed paths over the grassy paddock that kids especially love. If you are extra quiet and wake early you may see the elusive Muluny. Please keep to the walking tracks. If you wish to 4WD there are plenty of local tracks off the farm in the surrounding bush. The local area offers spectacular waterfalls, swimming holes, bush walking, forest drives, 4WD tracks and Ulong and Lowanna shops for food, fuel and supplies. The Ulong RSL has great food and cold beer. Check their social media. We are 1 hour from both Coffs Harbour and Dorrigo with all their natural attractions. Although you will be quite secluded, noise travels so please be mindful. Generators will be fine. No guns, motorbikes, fireworks or raves! You may bring your furry friends but please consider the risks. There are wild dogs in the bush and baiting still occurs in state forests. Dogs unaccustomed to stock and wildlife can behave unpredictably when their instincts kick in. It would be very sad indeed to have a dog wounded (or worse) or to run off chasing a wallaby never to be seen again. Check them carefully for ticks too. We will respect your privacy, however you may see us checking cattle, water points or fence lines. If you feel like a chat wave us down. Mobile service ok but you may need to walk to a high point to get full service. If you need to contact us at any time, day or night, please do via text or phone call. We live on the other side of the river. Due to location, in times of impending fire, flood or plague, camping will be suspended for your safety and refunds arranged. We wish you a wonderful camping experience connecting with nature and exploring our special part of the world. Don't forget your marshmallows!!
