Best in Illinois: 3rd place
Named one of the best Hipcamps to visit in 2023.
The Shawnee National Forest surrounds us, accessible only by wandering roads, passing over creeks and alongside wineries. The trip is worth the beautiful drive, eventually arriving at "The Villa". Our home looks like an Italian villa, appropriately placed between two wineries in the middle of the Shawnee Forest. It is actually a straw-bale home with supplemental solar energy. Originally built as a Holistic Healing Center, we have converted it into a comfortable home with great vibes. We have converted an old grain bin into a "GrainZebo" just outside our home as a fun place to hang out with friends and family. We hope you enjoy the same relaxed feel we get while living out here in the woods, when you come visit. We will be happy to help you feel at home out here. We love sharing the Shawnee experience.

Wine Trail Wilderness
Quick weekend at Wine Trail Wildern
We had a blast during a quick overnight at Jon's place. He and his crew were ready for us when we arrived and promptly checked us into our site complete with a huge jug of ice water, recycle and trash receptacles, more firewood that we could have burnt through and a very well maintained camp site. Only 10 minutes away, Little Grand Canyon was an awesome hike with some many varied features throughout the trail. On the way back and only 7 mins from camp was Mase's Bar and Grill where we stopped for dinner and drinks and dice games. The smoked meat and house sauces were incredible and the pours were generous. The rest of the evening around the fire star gazing was a relaxing wind down for the day. We enjoyed visiting with Jon the next morning after we had gotten breakfast and started our day. Our dogs enjoyed playing ball and making a new friend in Jon. We look forward to visiting again soon to visit the many features in the area and to get back to Mase's for try more of thier menu selections.

Camping with Friends!
This was our second time at Wine Trail Wilderness and like before, it was an amazing experience. Jon, the camp host is so welcoming and kind. The property is well kept and maintained. The bocce ball court is an added bonus! And the location is great to some hiking trails and wineries.

Excellent Eclipse location!
My mother, partner, and I visited the WTW during the total solar eclipse. John is truly committed and passionate about making sure EVERYONE has a good time and is taken care of. Whether it be driving by the site often to check in on firewood, water, tables, camp furniture, or to share a good chat..he is a wonderful host. We were very grateful for the firewood and fresh spring water, and for John’s inviting space. We were even able to see the perfect eclipse view from the 2nd highest elevation in the county, on his property. The Pomona winery, Shawnee Natl Forest, and Little Grand Canyon trails are must see things in the immediate area!

Don't hesitate to book a site here
This was our second visit to Wine Trail Wilderness and it was just as amazing as our first. Jon goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is comfortable and has what they need. The firewood was plentiful, we were supplied with a full water cooler of delicious water, we were given a small trash and recycling bucket for our campsite, and the bucket composting toilet solution is the nicest I have ever used (there is even an exhaust fan, light, and hand washing station in the enclosure). To top it all of, Jon is also great company if you are interested in chatting. We will definitely be back.
