There is a fence running along the back of the property separating it from the park.  If you are tent camping; park along the side of the road or drive through the drainage ditch and park in the flat area in the front of the property but feel free to pitch your tent anywhere on the lot. We have a lovely 20 ft pinon pine grove, junipers, and some cacti scattered around the property making for lots of privacy and shaded areas for your tent. We only ask you respect our beautiful foliage and do not cut, damage or remove any of our trees, bushes or cacti. The sloping hill creates a natural amphitheater with incredible views of the Black Hills basin and San Juan mountains behind it.  The entrance to Lathrop State Park is a quick 4-minute drive; you can fish, boat, swim at their beach, paddle board, bike, horseback, do archery, and great walking/biking/roller blading trails around the two lakes. If you enjoy golf, there is a golf course on the east side of the state park with beautiful views of the lakes, the Spanish Peaks and club house straight out of caddy shack. The historic mine town of Walsenburg is 10 minutes down the road. There are restaurants, shops, and a movie theatre along their historic main street. Great Sand Dunes National Monument is 65 mins west. 45 mins to Pueblo. One hour to Bishops Castle. Wolf Creek ski area and Taos ski valley are both 2 hours and 15 mins away. Come see the beauty that southern Colorado and the Spanish Peaks have to offer. Please note that the pictures of the lakes are in the State Park and not the actual campsite. Even though the campsite backs up to the State Park you can’t see or access the lakes without entering threw the park entrance which is a short drive from the campsite. Thank you

My friends wouldn't handle this lol
I personally found this place to be perfect, even my 3 special needs kids and one of their friends had a blast this past weekend. I don't give it a low rating personally, but it asked if I would recommend it to friends, and I probably wouldn't, only because if I could talk any friends to going camping, this would be the last place they'd want to go. You'd have to really be able to rough it here, and be ok with a little dirt in your food when the wind picks up. We were greeted by a herd of goats and their protective Great Pyrenees guard, 2 adorable chihuahuas that ran into camp to welcome us, we got some recurve longbow lessons in, we had a rather large black beetle that followed us all over the camp area wanting attention, so my 11 year old called him Jeffrey Beetle (Bezos) lol. So if you see Jeffrey, tell him we said hi. There is no running water, so bottled water is a must, and keeping in mind to check for cacti is helpful when squating to... you know. Have metal tent pegs no less than 8" long to get into the ground. Our plastic ones broke just trying to get past the first 3 inches when the dirt was suddenly very dry and compact like rock, but the metal ones went right through. Terrain wise, it was a challenge, and I wouldn't recommend it to first time campers, but the SCENERY! Now that was worth it!

Only good thing was the stars
Prior to going the host was responsive to questions, but I thought there were multiple sites and just trying to confirm my car would make it through the ditch in the pictures. This site was next to the main road and we drove past it not even realizing it was a campsite. Driving into the site there are metal bars inside the ditch which could’ve popped my tires. There was a loud trucking racing in circles and yelling as they drove past around 10PM. There was so much cacti, we all got multiple spines in our hands and feet. There was trash everywhere!! Cooking pan - spike - beer cans - random garbage - and toilet paper scattered around. The wind was terrible and we had no shade. You’re next to a junkyard and a RV where someone lives. This small black chihuahua came and took a number 2 next to the site where we would walk out and peed in the middle of where we were camping. It’s also super sandy and uneven with no specific space for a tent to be placed. Obviously not maintained and couldn’t even keep the tent spikes in the ground because the dirt is so loose. Called the host the day of asking for help finding the site and he never reached back out. I have photos of the garbage and metal rod in the ditch. Not happy and feel robbed of $20.

High Desert Oasis
Great spot for group camping
Property was exactly as promised, nice open land area with some shaded spots but mostly open, great for bigger groups tent camping. We were able to set up tents, tables, day shades, park vehicles, and still have room to set up games and have a fire. While it's not right on the lake, it's a quick 3 minute drive to the State Park where we were able to set up for the day and had access to facilities. For the price, it's a great open area site for primitive camping or RVs. Definitely plan on going again.

Not able to camp there.
We drove 3 hours to the spot only to realize once we got there, that there was no way to camp there. The photo on the listing was for the reservoir that you cannot even see from the campground. We knew there would be some cactus there, as the title mentions. However, there was not enough space between any of the cacti to even safely lay a tent down. There is no privacy, as the area is right next to a road. There were some bushes, but the area was not flat to put a tent anywhere. The “neighbors” who are about 50 yards away were yelling and screaming at each other and their dog got loose and ran over to us then bit me as I tried to get him back to the owners. They even seemed surprised we were trying to camp there. The whole thing was really disappointing as this was our only planned camping trip this summer (time off work) to not even unpack the car. We just got back in our car and drove the three hours back home. There should be updated photos of the actual campground on this listing, because that would have saved me and my boyfriend so much time and money for this trip. Really upsetting to be honest. We were hoping to go paddle boarding on the reservoir, but with the neighbors that close, how they were asking a bunch of questions just didn’t feel safe. Brian was communicating with me well before the trip, but I don’t feel was honest on the quality of the campground. He was very nice, and I hate to leave a bad review but this experience really was extremely disappointing

Great times had by all!
We had a great time at Brandon’s site. It’s exactly as advertised. The fire pit and scenery are great!! The property is nicely marked out and has a pull around to park your car or trailer on. The state park was fantastic. It’s 9 bucks to get in and the beach has shaded picnic tables and lots of sand and grass. There are showers and bathrooms at the beach we used this morning. There is a Safeway about 5 minutes down the road and we stopped to stock up last night (they sell wood for the fire pit). Overall it’s a great place at a great price. We will definitely be back again.
