The best camping near Roper Lake State Park guide

Overview

About

Imagine cowboys riding horseback and corralling cattle at this state park 5 miles south of Safford. This lake is just 32 acres, but it's prime real estate for getting away from it all. The surrounding desert hillsides offer places to explore and view the lake from above.

Dankworth Pond offers a unique way to relax after an active day on this former ranch. Check out the natural stone hot tub. The circular stone allows for several people to sit in the tub at once. Quiet afternoons or evenings offer a romantic setting.

Use the campgrounds at this lake as a base of operations for further exploring. Put in your small boat to catch bass or trout. Hike from here to Mount Graham off in the distance for high adventure among the Sky Islands. Guided bird hikes put you up close to native desert birds.

Choose from 45 RV sites with water and electricity. Five non-electric sites and a 14-site group camp area are great for tents. Glamp it up with eight cabins near the waterfront.

Notable campgrounds

  • Gila Campground: Offers spacious sites with stunning lake views, perfect for anglers and nature lovers.
  • Cottonwood Campground: Ideal for families, featuring playgrounds and easy access to the park's amenities.
  • Hacienda Campground: Provides a more secluded camping experience, with sites nestled amid lush vegetation.
