The best camping near Calling Lake Provincial Park guide

Overview

About

Set 2.5 hours north of Edmonton, Calling Lake Provincial Park offers RV sites and tent camping on the shores of Calling Lake, a stunning body of water in a boreal forest where lakes, rivers, and wetlands are abundant. WIth that, many visitors come for the water-based activities on the lake, as the boat ramps and docks make it a great location for anglers, water skiers, and paddlers wanting to navigate by watercraft. Birdwatchers will find exceptional opportunities to spot large numbers of resident and migratory species, while anglers can catch walleye and pike at Calling Lake and in many of the surrounding waters. Calling Lake Campground has 81 campsites for tents and RV, many with direct lake access.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Campsites are reservable from May 20 to September 7 each year before closing for late fall and winter.
  2. Calling Lake has an online reservation system to book in advance.
  3. RV campsites have varying 120v, 150-amp, and 30-amp electric hookups.
  4. The 41 tent sites accept car campers and are the most likely to have last-minute availability.
  5. A number of private campgrounds can be found in the area, offering nice alternatives if Calling Lake is full.

When to go

Summer and fall are the primary camping seasons at Calling Lake, as campsites are reservable from May 20 to September 7 each year. The early end of this season is more popular for anglers, while water skiers typically arrive in July and August when water temperatures are more inviting. September leads into hunting season—moose and bears are active in the area, as are waterfowl and other species of interest. The campground facilities close in late fall and winter, but the lake and park remain open for ice fishing and winter recreation.

Know before you go

  • Firewood sold on-site at the Calling Lake Campground during daytime hours.
  • Prevent the spread of aquatic species by following best practices after visiting any body of water. Clean, drain, and dry all equipment.
  • The park has a playground for children and plenty of open space for walking.
  • Pit toilets, water, and sewage disposal are available on-site. The potable water is for filling jugs only, and is not compatible for filling RV tanks.
