Where to go

Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat

Cochrane established its Polar Bear Habitat in town in 2004 as the only facility in the world dedicated to caring for polar bears and educating the public. Learn about polar bears and conservation efforts while getting an up-close look at them in over 24 acres of subarctic terrain and boreal forests. Campers can book in advance for special experiences, including photo tours, behind-the-scenes peeks, and crate training sessions. The habitat also has on-site camping for tents, campervans, and RVs with potable water and washrooms.

Kettle Lakes Provincial Park

About one hour south of Cochrane, Kettle Lakes Provincial Park has water-sport adventures among the jack pine boreal forest. Twenty-two deep kettle lakes—formed from the retreat of glaciers thousands of years ago—offer opportunities to canoe and kayak. Eager anglers looking to catch rainbow or brook trout will enjoy the lakes, too. Then, explore hiking trails and 14 kilometres of biking trails before choosing from 139 campsites spread between two campgrounds. Amenities include showers, laundry facilities, and public restrooms with hot water—some campsites also feature electrical hookups.

RenĂŠ Brunelle Provincial Park

René Brunelle Provincial Park is just an hour northeast of Cochrane, and it offers a little something for everyone. From fishing for smallmouth bass to exploring the four sandy beaches surrounding Remi Lake, campers can spend days here. The park has two hiking trails, both of which take about an hour and have little elevation gain—making them perfect for families with kids. The park has 88 campsites, most with electricity, and all campsites are near flush toilets, hot water, and a laundromat.

When to go

Cochrane, Ontario offers year-round amenities and activities, but summer tends to be the most popular time of year with nearby campgrounds opening from May to September (or October). June and July are the hottest months with highs averaging about 22°C. However, considering the city’s extensive snowfall and love for polar bears, Cochrane has become a hub for winter activities, including cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, all topped off with a winter carnival.
