RAINBOW'S END FARM
The permaculture farm has several historic barns and is home to many happy animals: goats, chickens, and ducks, and is full of lush berries, apples, plums and more. To book a tour of the farm, a guided medicinal plant walk, or inquire about classes (such as how to make jam and essential oils) please contact us in advance.
1917 - 1930: The yellow farmhouse and three historic red barns were built from Redwood Trees on the land. The farm had a large vineyard that was plowed under by the local Sheriff during prohibition.
1940 - 1950: The farm featured the largest cherry orchard in Sonoma County. Cherry blight in the 1960's killed most of the trees (too much morning fog).
1950 - 1960: The land served as a cattle ranch and Apple orchard.
1970: A group purchased the land to build "Esalen North" and host interpersonal growth workshops. A legendary Herbal Gathering, of some of the countries leading medicinal plant experts (founders of Traditional Medicinals and Celestial Seasonings), was held at this time.
1975: Don and Nan purchased the land and established a home-birthing clinic in the red barn at bottom of parking lot (make sure to look for the historic stained glass of baby in utero). In the ensuing decade, over 1,200 home births are attended to in Sonoma County and thousands of moms and babies are seen at the farm clinic.
2000: Nan retires from midwifery and devotes all of her energy to permaculture farming selling her farm products (jams, herbs, fresh fruit etc.) at local farmers markets.

Such a beauty spot! We stayed at campsite #1 and enjoyed the cotton candy sunset from the super comfortable Adirondack chairs warmed by a gorgeous fire. They have really thought through everything from the lights on the pathway to the very awesome dish washing station/ honey bucket. Nan was such a kind soul and made us feel right at home bringing us fresh eggs in the morning! Definitely excited to stay here again.
Lovely redwood camp spot
Highly recommended! Great location near the sweet town of occidental but very quiet and beautifully wooded area. The redwood trail is lovely for a short walk. Though there are 4 sites, still very private. Would love to come back. Picnic table and chairs are nice. Also not far to get to bodega bay or beaches.
I would highly recommend staying here! A two-minute drive to Occidental (coffee, hardware store, and outdoor dining). Ideal campsite layout with assigned parking spots and friendly hosts. The water station with seasonal fruit was a great compliment. Take the farm tour with Nan and buy farmer market goods directly from her!
Great camp site! 5 min drive to the town of Occidental. Nice and peaceful, with running water and port-a-potty near by. You can hear the rooster and chickens crowing in the morning but we got yummy eggs from Nan for our breakfast so I wasn’t complaining :) Lots of bird activity if you are a birder! There’s a picnic table and comfy outdoor chairs as well.
Lovely campsite on the farm!
Great locale! It's as described...nestled in the Redwoods, but site #1 has lots of sunlight/sunset views (w/ shade too). They did a good job of creating some privacy for the site and the communal 'kitchen' sink set-up was handy. The adirondack chairs were also a lovely touch! Occidental is a stone's throw and a very quaint town; we enjoyed the farmer's market there. Definitely recommend!
