Rainbow's End Farm is in a lush redwood forest setting, one mile from the charming town of Occidental in the heart of West Sonoma County. From your campsite you have private hiking access to a majestic redwood grove (20-acre redwood forest preserve). Relax in nature while only being minutes from gourmet restaurants, grocery stores, and shopping, as well as 20 minutes to Bodega Bay and Hwy 1.

The permaculture farm has several historic barns and is home to many happy animals: goats, chickens, and ducks, and is full of lush berries, apples, plums and more. To book a tour of the farm, a guided medicinal plant walk, or inquire about classes (such as how to make jam and essential oils) please contact us in advance.

HISTORY

1917 - 1930: The yellow farmhouse and three historic red barns were built from Redwood Trees on the land. The farm had a large vineyard that was plowed under by the local Sheriff during prohibition.

1940 - 1950: The farm featured the largest cherry orchard in Sonoma County. Cherry blight in the 1960's killed most of the trees (too much morning fog).

1950 - 1960: The land served as a cattle ranch and Apple orchard.

1970: A group purchased the land to build "Esalen North" and host interpersonal growth workshops. A legendary Herbal Gathering, of some of the countries leading medicinal plant experts (founders of Traditional Medicinals and Celestial Seasonings), was held at this time.

1975: Don and Nan purchased the land and established a home-birthing clinic in the red barn at bottom of parking lot (make sure to look for the historic stained glass of baby in utero). In the ensuing decade, over 1,200 home births are attended to in Sonoma County and thousands of moms and babies are seen at the farm clinic.

2000: Nan retires from midwifery and devotes all of her energy to permaculture farming selling her farm products (jams, herbs, fresh fruit etc.) at local farmers  markets.

This land is pure magic! You can feel it from the moment you drive in. Nan has created something truly special and worth experiencing through her cultivation and care-taking of this land. Beautifully maintained, organized, and tended. Wish we would have booked a farm tour to get to know the place even better!

We had a wonderful time at Rainbow’s End Farm and would certainly return. Nan gave our family and another group a tour of her farm and the kids got to go in the pens with ducks, goats, and chickens. My daughter collected eggs for the first time. Nan shared copious plums and blackberries from her garden. She was generous and kind.

The campsite itself was great. There was a flat, shady area for the tent, a table and chairs, and a great short redwood hike immediately behind the campsite. The porta potty was fine and there was a place to wash dishes and get potable water. As we’d been warned from other reviews, the roosters were noisy before daylight but they were easy enough to ignore.

Really lovely campsite, private, quiet. The sink and soap provided is very helpful. We had a tour with Nan and she is so warm and welcoming. Keep in mind it’s a farm— so there are roosters crowing in the morning! :)

Totally would return to Rainbows End!

Had a great experience at Rainbow’s End Farm! The sink and toilet were both tidy and near all of the camping sites. We stayed at Campsite #2, which was well shaded and comfortable for four people. The site was also connected to a trail loop that was great for small dogs and took about a half-hour. Would definitely come back here!

We enjoyed camping here!

The sites are set off into the trees and would be perfect for tent camping. The tent sites themselves were beautifully treed and private. However, we were in an RV and so had so stay in the parking lot. This in comparison was less private, and cars would drive/park nearby, and people would walk next to us. This wasn’t ideal given our RV situation.
The site itself has a nice sink with potable water, perfect for hand or dish washing. The portapotee was right next door too which was convenient.
The site overall is situated in a beautiful area, through vineyards and on a farm. This definitely felt special.
Overall, not an ideal RV camping scenario but would definitely recommend if you are tenting!

We had such a perfect camp out at Rainbow’s End Farm. I highly recommend taking the tour with Nan! She is inspirational and full of knowledge as well as very nice. We made camping “friends” with the people in the next camp and everyone we met was so nice! Even all the dogs are nice. It truly is enchanted and I think site #2 is the best site with just the right amount of shade and space to lounge around.

Nan is seriously the sweetest and incredible old lady in the land. I had a run in with a fellow property owner who wasn't very happy to have me there but Nan and her son who made the campground made remarkable strides to assure me that I'm welcome and made everything right. They gave me a refund for my negative experience and called me to make sure things are settled right and I appreciate all much thier effort and empathy with rainy days and we all have to deal with landlords who have thier heads up thier ass every now and then. I love you Nan, and thank you Josh spot all your effort and care!

Overall, we enjoyed Campsite #2 at Rainbow's End Farm.

PROS: Pretty location, well shaded, fire pit, picnic table, adirondack chairs, potable water and clean porta potty. We enjoyed our farm tour ($20 per person) with Nan. She is clearly a special person.

CONS: 1) While the farm itself is a fun attraction, the rooster was super loud and made a racket around 4-5am both days. 2) There is a lot of poison oak, so if you take the nature walk through the redwoods (short 0.5 mi trail) you need to watch your step. There is also a lot of poison oak surrounding the campsite, so you need to careful just picking up kindling. You can manage fine, just pay attention. We did not get a rash. 3) Sites #1 and 2 are pretty close to each other. Site #3 is a bet set back and quite large, used for Native American ceremonies. I would probably choose site #3 if I were to stay there again. 4) Very hard to get any data service at the farm, so print a map in advance.
