We had an incredible time at Mikey's place. Mikey and his wife have added so many thoughtful touches — from the palm frond shelter to the outdoor kitchen to the many gathering spots they've set up for campers. We especially loved the sunrise from the campsite and all of the friendly dogs!

Not only was our space extra comfortable but had a stargazing area as well. Mikey is a fantastic host and we can’t wait to come back. If you go be sure to spend some time in the gallery and viewing the many art installations 💚

We loved the Desert Isle shelter. We spent two nights there during a full moon, the skies were spectacular. Friendly, affectionate dogs were a bonus. Sitting by our fire under a full moon and stars, listening to the night sounds was heavenly. The sunken shelter is charming, peaceful and meditative. We could see staying there for a week and really settling in.

As others have mentioned, earplugs may be a must for you. The nighttime rooster chorus, near and far, was amusing but not the best for sleep. (Don't let this put you off. We just think knowing what to expect will steer away anyone for whom this place might be too eclectic/fun/funky, who might subsequently overlook its charm and warmth in their reviews. Folks who might fare better at a Best Western ;-)

In other words we loved being there and will come again.
This is definitely a HipCamp site. I can easily say it's not for everyone. We played a game of thinking of friends who would definitely not appreciate it's charms. But if you're looking on HipCamp, it's likely that IT IS for you. (And maybe your earplugs.)

We also think families with kids would love it. Dogs, a giant tortoise named Rocky, an outdoor kitchen, an art gallery, a variety of shelters, nights with live music, a pizza oven, swing sets ... what's not to love?!

Yeah, honestly, now that we're home, we can't wait to go back.

Thanks Mickey and JoAnne!

The Desert Isle had been on my wishlist for quite some time so we were very excited to come stay here. Overall, I'm glad we checked it out. We felt it was a unique, eclectic stay and the hosts Mikey and JoAnne were very kind. We appreciated the thoughtfulness they put into the unique space they offer. Unfortunately, the site was close to a few other camps so it did not feel as private as expected. It is completely open except mostly closed on one side. The second night was very windy and we wound up with sand all over us and in the bed. Additionally, and to no fault of the hosts, the roosters on the ranch next to theirs kept us up both nights even with earplugs and a beanie on. They start before sunrise like 2am or so, and go pretty much all day. There is also land across the way that had some sort of party and the sound really echoed loudly to our campsite, it kept us up until at least 2/3am. We were joking that at least it drowned out the roosters... Which continued even after the music stopped. I can say, the hut itself is cute but really does need some repairing. It's missing a lot of palm fronds and you can tell a lot of them are very old and crispy. Lots of large gaps in the roof. The fire pit was great at night. It might be helpful to have a designated/labeled area for firewood, we brought a bit of our own but we and other campers were confused about certain wood piles being art or firewood haha :P I hope the hut can be improved so I can recommend it to my friends :)

Mikey was great, welcomed us even though we got there around 10pm! The dogs were so sweet and we loved hanging out with them in the mornings and playing fetch! The property has tons of awesome art and the other campers on the property had great vibes! It was very windy while we were staying, and Mikey was so considerate to offer us a spot inside, we ended up staying in the shelter which offered great wind and rain coverage. We will definitely be back:)
