Lucky Penny Laytonville is a thriving multi-generational family home and campground dedicated to music, art, gardening, cooking, and family fun. Just 3 sites on 4 acres!

Camping made easy with HOT SHOWERS and a large, FULLY OUTFITTED OPEN AIR OUTDOOR KITCHEN!!: sinks, refrigerator, stove, toaster oven, toaster, blender, espresso machine, coffee grinder, dishes, utensils, pans, cutting boards, etc. All equipment stays in the kitchen so as to be available for everyone. The foods you find in the space belong to others and should not be taken! THIS IS A SHARED WORK SPACE. LEAVE IT CLEAN AND CLEAR OF YOUR POSSESSIONS. Because the kitchen may only be used by one family at a time, please do not eat in the kitchen. as that makes it unavailable for other campers and residents.

EASY TURN AROUND: Your big vehicle will fit along the road here at campsites #2  (Your car can not be driven right up to your picnic table. To park near your picnic table, reserve campsite #1.). It's about a 30 yard walk from where you park your car to your campsite. There is a wheel barrel to help move your things. Your car will be safe on our little private road. We have a 80' turn around at the end of our road to make access super easy!

LIBRARY OF TOYS, BOOKS, PUZZLES, AND GAMES. Around the property, there's plenty of cool forest shade, a park like lawn, and a sunny meadow. Find yourself a cozy spot on a sofa under the trees or in a hammock with a good book from our library. There's always a jigsaw puzzle out on one of the picnic tables by the pizza oven. We’ve got badminton and croquet, just ask. Enjoy looking at the stars through the telescope, just ask. Each campsite has a picnic table & benches.

Outlets to CHARGE YOUR PHONE and DEVICES and an Electric Vehicle charging station are available (fee to charge car). Wifi in several places in town (1 mile).

Please NO FIRES during Fire Season. CHECK WITH HOSTS about whether fires are currently allowed. Fire MUST be completely extinguished before you go to sleep at night. Firewood available for purchase. SMOKERS, please be super careful!

We are powered by the sun and quenched by the fresh water from the well. Fruit trees and extensive gardens dot the property. Feel free to pick a piece of fruit.

We're in a wooded country neighborhood where lots of folks have dogs, so you might hear some barking and see some neighbors. Very occasionally we see a dog off leash. We ask that you keep your dogs on leash at all times, as we have cats & chickens and our neighbors have small children.

A note about private property: Our property is not all fenced. The side boundaries follow the lines of the fencing up by the house. The end of out property is marked with a sign along the our road. Please respect our neighbors' privacy. We encourage you to enjoy the forest, but do be aware that there is poison oak. If you don't know what it looks like we can show you.

Please arrive between Noon - 8pm. Text us your estimated arrival time and then when you're 15 minutes out, let us know you're getting close. Please try to get here by 8:00pm. However, you can prearranged for a late arrival in "Extras." We are flexible about check out time, if we do not have other campers arriving for your site. Just ask.

We are flexible about cancelations. If you cancel 24 hours before check-in time (1pm), you get a full refund, automatically. Cancelling with less than 24 hours notice? We will refund you as follows: A booking of 2 or more days, you will be charged for only one day.

We loved it. We found Lucky Penny by chance and I am so glad we did. There were so many fun and charming details. The beautiful wild garden, the vintage dish-ware in the outdoor common kitchen, a stage/star gazing platform with a big collection of board games and puzzles for guests. The camp sites are nice, each one has its own special location within a good comfortable distance from each other without feeling sparse. Upon arriving we met with the host who was friendly and welcoming. And we found a bowl of fruit they had grown on the grounds at our site they had provided for us with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the garden on the picnic table. In the evenings we enjoyed running into the hosts and even got to play a little music all together. It felt like hanging out with a fun neighbor. It’s close to the little town and about forty minutes from the beach. But the only thing we wish we’d done different was stay longer to enjoy the grounds more. It would very easy to enjoy some lazy days there basking in the forest sun.

Hillary is such a nice, friendly, thoughtful host! We loved the little touches of this Hipcamp, and cooking in the huge outdoor kitchen was SO fun. There was much fresh fruit to be eaten, and Hillary pointed us toward Hole in the Wall, which was a really beautiful swimming spot about 20 minutes away. It was nice to pack lighter with camping as we didn't need to bring any cooking stuff, and super helpful to have a fridge (note: no freezer). We did a day trip to Black Sands Beach in Westport, which was also fantastic, so this location ended up as a good base for us. Our kids loved it -- games, toys, old Ranger Rick magazines (!). Generally pretty quiet for sleeping; there's some background road noise, but the crickets get loud, too. :)

We were only here for a very short stopover but Hillary was very sweet and welcomed us, showed us everything we needed and then brought out 3 of the cutest little kittens for my boys to play with before bedtime. There was a kitchen full of ripening pears that we were told we were welcome to and our campsite was surprisingly spacious. We brought out deck chairs from the shed of everything (books/puzzles/games) and gazed at stars on the deck.

Our group thoroughly enjoyed staying here. It is a beautiful spot with great amenities. The shower was the number one added bonus we all loved. We also loved having a kitchen space and the composting toilets. The platform was perfect for out badminton game and star gazing. Some of us even spent the night out there on the platform. We like the meadow site (with strategic planning on tent setup under the trees for maximum shade) and site 1 the best. The meadow site does not have much privacy since everyone will be using the kitchen area. Site 2 is small but has the most privacy. Site 2 is also best with 2 smaller tents.
We happened to have the place to ourselves for most of out trip. If you are a smaller group and sharing the space with other campers there is not much privacy, except back at site 2. Site 2 is small with room for 2-3 small tents and a picnic table and that is it. No room to move around or do anything else.
Only thing missing is being on a lake or creek. The ocean is a quick 45 minute drive and the creek is a short driven away. Though this year there was not enough water to enjoy the creek.
Road noise was minimal even though it so close to Hwy 101.
Hilary was a great host and attended to all our needs.
