Pitch your tent or pull up your RV or camper van on Death Valley's front porch just outside of Surprise Canyon in Panamint Valley. Near the ghost town of Ballarat, Death Valley Stargazing Camp is one of only four private parcels in all of Panamint Valley -- and lies just west of the Death Valley National Park boundary. This pristine valley is untouched, and offers panoramic views of amazing sunsets, sunrises, and of course dark, dark skies! The property features campsites with privacy amongst the 80 acres. All sites have several hundred feet in between them, and include a picnic bench, fire ring, and shared porta-potties across from the Green Alien Mailbox (800 - 1200 feet away depending on your campsite -- or as we call them, Starsites). And did we mention the views?? Whether you're visiting Death Valley, or just passing through the desert -- these campsites are serene, scenic, and include a stargazing wonderland!

Site #1: Recessed from the road, this is the biggest site and has ample room for any type of vehicle, as well as lots of vehicles. Vehicles can pull through.

Site #2: Closer to the road and also fairly big. Some vehicles can pull through but some will have to back out. Large trailers could be a problem.

Site #3: Along side the road and the smallest of the three sites (although all sites are surrounded by nothing). All vehicles will have to back out of this site. Large trailers could be a problem.

SIte #4: Across from the mailbox on the west side of the road. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR LARGE TRAILERS OR ANY HEAVY VEHICLES WHICH COULD GET STUCK IN THE SAND! Cars should proceed with caution and stay on the road as there are areas of loose sand near this site. Walk to it first to check conditions if you are unsure.

Come join us in the middle of nowhere with dark skies and easy access to Death Valley, the Trona Pinnacles, Darwin Falls, and countless canyons with mining ruins and adventures!

We were not able to get to the site. You had to read way down in the confirmation email to find very rough directions to get to the site. When we thought we found the final road, it was 6 miles of road impossible to drive on, AND HIP CAMP MADE NO MENTION OF THIS FACT. WE ALSO FOUND ON THE MAP THAT THE ROAD WAS BLOCKED, AND DIDN'T WANT TO DRIVE 6 MILES ON IMPASSABLE ROAD TO HAVE TO TURN BACK. HIP CAMP ALSO IGNORED TEXTA FOR HELP UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING AFTER WE WERE SUPPOSED TO STAY THERE. THEY HAVE A 60 DAY CANCELLATION, AND SINCE I MADE THE RESERVATION THE NIGHT BEFORE, I GUESS THEY WON'T REFUND MY approximately $48. Not sur I'll ever use Hip Camp again.

Great camping spot! Perfect for a quiet getaway with no souls around. The views are epic. A bit of wildlife around but all friendly. Beware of the sly foxes... They almost figured out how to open the car doors lol. Campsites are clean and there are portos on site (surprisingly in good condition).

Amazing views, nice and quiet. Exactly what I would look for in the desert. I would go back.
Porta potties are gross though, make sure you use a restroom beforehand.

This place was magical, other-worldly, remote and perfect!!! With the added benefits of the fire pit and access to a bathroom, it was priceless!!! Waking up to the wild donkeys was surely an experience unto itself!

Quit amazing - in the middle of no where by your self! I loved it.
Things to know :
When you turn right onto the unpaved road there are no lights and it is dark. The road itself is sandy and I was riding my Harley so it was slippery!
When I got to the GPS location I thought someone had pranked me! There was nothing there - then I saw the green mailbox . The campsites are behind. There are definitely some type of animals there I am not sure which but a few loud noises where happening !
It is a special place and I look forward to returning!

If you want to see the prettiest night sky, Death Valley is the place you just gotta go. This particular site is small and private for a campground in the desert. Potty’s were dried from the heat but did the job. The wild Donkey’s were the only sound to hear and was only when they wandered close enough. The alien signs have been removed or taken, not sure which so the green mail box is your only marker. Cheers!

Directions made this gem right outside of Death Valley easy to find! With no one for miles, it was quite the camping experience. Be sure to drive slowly on the dirt road to be safe and also because of the wild burros nearby! Stargazing was utterly incredible - the view of the galaxy was great. Would recommend for a unique camping experience.
