Each campsite at Ascension Ranch offer unique getaways, and Oak Bottom is certainly one of a kind. Drive up to your site, find your favorite tent and hammock spots, then, kick back and relax! This site is situated in our lowest level pasture, bottom of the 100 acre ranch than other sites which provides guests easy access to walk and visit sheep, goats, horses, and other ranch animals. We often have horses grazing around this pasture, offering a one of a kind experience for animal lovers. Just a short stroll from the site, you'll find a gate leading to the many trails we have access to, including access directly to Folsom Lake.

With direct access to hiking, biking, and horse friendly trails that lead to, and around Folsom Lake, we encourage guests to bring all their toys ... think about bringing light weight paddle boats, water floats, fishing gear, binoculars, hiking gear, mountain bikes, and of course your horses.

Interesting but not awful

The camp site was.....interesting. the slanted ground makes everything EXTREMELY difficult. The porta potty hasnt been serviced since OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR and was beyond revolting. The animals on property arent friendly and will definitely try and fight you. Oh and their fishing "kit" was a joke. One pole a little rubber bait that doesnt work at all and the fishing line is like 6 pound line and they only give you 1 hook. That said theres still great views and the water was nice but getting to it was horribly hard on foot. Asthmatics beware as the campsite is nothing but dust and its almost impossible to breathe. Oh and definitely be ready for the very windy narrow roads getting there and back. The people were very kind and the kids had fun still but management has a lot to work on.

I have stayed at a lot of Hipcamps, but this was not a good fit for me or my group.
I truly appreciate the hosts opening up their space, but attempting an honest review here to make sure it's a good fit for your group.

We stayed at "Oaks Bottom" site, for the anticipated hope of an easy trail to get closer to the water. The lake is lower than average years, but the access/trail from this site is about a mile. You have to load up boats/paddleboards/etc in a car, and drive to another campsite. Then park and walk, about 1/2 mile down a long and hot sloped trail down.

The actual site was simple, appreciated the picnic table and garbage can. It is really dusty and rough, not very flat unfortunately, Had some trouble trying to get our camper van and tents level. The road back to the site was too bumpy and
a regular car (Toyota camry) was too low clearance and could not access. (Still charged $15 for her to stop by for a few hours, but she left because of the tough access.) My sprinter van could barely make it over the big bumps.

For the total cost, it seemed a bust. (Site per night, plus $ for extra cars and people made this the most expensive one we have used.) Too far from water for recreation, no water or perks like showers or real bathrooms, more rustic than I anticipated.

Horses going after food....

The greeting was great and site had a fire ring, port a pottie and the host was able to bring us firewood (for a fee). The site was very slanted, however, and there was no water. We were warned about the horses wondering around and to not leave food out. That being said the horses came to our site at 1am and 4am and opened our ice chest as well as a closed case to get at food. In our opinion, the horses should not be allowed to roam around! All in all, good location near to the state park which had access for our Stand up Paddleboards for a $12 fee since the water really far from the campsite.

Host was very helpful. Campsite does have a slope to it but not too bad. Campsite is a 20-30 min walk to lake. You can drive to the lake via day use area. Cost is $12. Overall a nice place to stay but a little expensive for what it is.

This place is awesome! The lake is a good little trek - probably 20 minutes at least. Terrain is hilly yes, but there are definitely flatish areas. We had 10 people and no complaints. They have other camp areas too, all worth visiting.

Beautiful time to stay here. Everything is lovely and green. The cell signal is a little low at the gate so I suggest messaging before than to get the gate code.
Was a pleasure to introduce my kids to camping through something so nice. Thank you

Great time here! Camp sites were private and very open. Walk to the lake was really nice. Would definitely recommend.

I found this place to be exactly what it was advertised to be in the best possible way. As a first time camper, choosing a first location is huge to ensure a good experience. This location had good natural shade as well as places to bask in the sun. Portapotties made doing business convenient and campfire pits and picnic tables help tie the campsite together. We went over to state land nearby to hike around the lake which was secluded and serene. I would recommend!
