Our 5 acre forested farm backs onto Hayward Lake and has the Stave River at the front of the property. Our farm has ducks, chickens, rabbits, and a collection of cats. There are wild berry bushes throughout the property and the surrounding forest. Lake access is private (people could hike in or canoe up, but normally we have it to ourselves) and the lake itself is a great spot for wildlife watching (beavers, deer, bats, fish, bears, owls, eagles, osprey etc.). The Stave River in the front of the property offers a more sunny spot for swimming and fishing. The Hayward Reservoir Trail circumnavigates the whole lake and the trail entrance is a 5 minute walk from the cabin. The cabin site includes a picnic table and outhouse. We provide fresh spring water and campfire wood can be supplied ($10 a bundle). The cabin is insulated and can be heated with the wood stove so it is suitable for use all year. The cabin is located in the middle of the forest right by the lake and is extremely private.  It is insulated and has a wood stove so it is comfortable in all seasons. The lake is a 1 minute walk from the cabin, accessed by a short trail and then some stairs. The cabin is a 2 min walk downhill from the main house. The cabin itself is 8x12 ft with a loft. It has a mini wood stove for heat and cooking and there is a camp stove for outdoor use. The kitchen includes a sink and some basic dishes/supplies and there is a small table. There is also a battery-powered lighting system and phone charger. The first floor features a bench that doubles as a bed. The loft is accessible by a ladder and has a queen mattress (you will need to bring your own bedding or sleeping bags). An outhouse is tucked around the back of the cabin. We provide a container of fresh spring water for drinking. There is also a fire pit in front of the cabin for use when there is not a fire ban, and we can supply wood ($10 a load) if you need it. The cabin sleeps 3 comfortably but if you need more room you can also book our tenting campsite as an add on at the time of booking (same place you book the canoe or pay for wood). The campsite is at the top of the hill, close to where you park for the cabin and has its own picnic table and outhouse. It can accommodate two medium sized tents or one large tent.

Camping in the cabin
We spent an overnight at the cabin. It was a lovely experience. When you turn up the drive it’s a steep climb up, to the farm. Follow the signs and trust the directions that Janna provided in her welcome message on the Hipcamp app. Once at the house we parked and were greeted by the neighbours friendly dog and some chickens. We went to the house and they had a wheel barrel ready for us to bring our things down the trail. We were warned not to keep food outside because of animals. If you’re spending a few days I would bring a cooler with ice. For cooking there was a good fire pit outside and a camping stove inside. The kettle is the square box on the back. They had kindling beside the stove and small pieces beside the stove we had to cut up to not smoother the stove. We brought our own fire wood, but they had a dried pile outside and an axe for splitting the bigger logs with the fire wood. There is a functional sink with a foot pump inside the cabin, and drinking water on the porch. The bathroom was a few feet from the cabin with a proper toilet seat, hand sanitizer, TP, and some wood chips to sprinkle on top. If you forget any cooking supplies the essentials are there. We brought our own pillows blankets and sheets. The mattress up top was cozy. We didn’t spend much time by the water, but we would have walked the trail if we had more time.

Anniversary Getaway
We had a little anniversary getaway with our three dogs! We had a great time walking through the trails and seeing the beautiful lake. It took us city folk a while to make a fire inside and out! we definitely could have used a lighter that worked and more matches. They left us two big piles of wood which helped because the inside wood was nice and dry. The fire that is inside is very small, so it needed a lot of attention. A couple hours into the night it was out and we didn’t bring blankets. They had two very thin blankets making it an uncomfortable sleep so bring your own blankets and pillows! It would have been helpful to have brighter lights outside for cutting wood and instead of walking around with a flashlight. In saying that though the bathroom was nice and clean with little lights that you can see from afar which was helpful at night.

Hayward Lake Cabin
The cabin was perfect for a winter retreat. It was clean and thoughtfully provisioned. The wood stove kept the space toasty and was handy for cooking. The hosts were friendly, helpful and accommodating. My non-4WD car had no trouble making it up the steep driveway. Would love to return in swimming season!

Peaceful cabin in the woods
My wife and I stayed one night in this simple, but cozy cabin. Everything was as advertised. Cabin felt clean and well maintained. Cabin was stocked with all necessary cooking equipment and utensils and easy to keep warm with the wood burning stove. We had a great time exploring the surrounding area and having this place to settle down for the night!
