The Painted Desert Ranger Cabin is a backcountry, off grid cabin built by Ranger Ross in 2011. Ranger Ross lived in the cabin while he worked as a resource protection ranger at the Petrified Forest National Park until 2015 when he transferred to the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. Ranger Ross now allows backcountry hikers to enjoy the cabin by renting it out by the night or the week.
The ranger cabin is a rustic off grid cabin that offers almost no amenities. There is no concierge, room service, or continental breakfast. There is no linen service or fancy little bottles of shampoo. It does however, offer beautiful views of the Painted Dessert wilderness, quiet serenity, and amazing star gazing opportunities. All from the comfort of a cozy one room cabin with a queen size bed and a flush toilet.
The cabin is not easily accessible by passenger vehicles. However, visitors can hike to it through the Petrified Forest National Park if they do not have an off-road capable vehicle. If you are driving please remember it is only accessible by dirt road. A high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended, the cabin is about 4 miles off the pavement.
This is a remote, back-country, cabin. Guests should plan to bring everything they will need including food, sleeping bags (or) linens for the queen size bed, fire wood, toilet paper and drinking water. Please clean up after your stay and leave the cabin ready for the next visitor.

Exceptional! everything for offgrid
Truly fantastic stay here—2 nights was not enough! The cabin stayed toasty warm despite the wind and snow. Be forewarned that 4x4/AWD was necessary with the soaked clay/sand roads.
This is a little spot of magic and best appreciated for those who want to get away from cell service and settle into a slower, more nature influenced pace of life. Rangers Ross and Kip do a great job of facilitating hospitality and providing for most needs but take heed that those accustomed to glamping & Airbnb’s may find the amenities a bit of a stretch on their comfort zone—alternatively, if you’re a seasoned camper or backpacker, this setting is delux and plush. Basically, be prepared and enjoy!
We certainly will be back! Thank you!
This place it’s just magic. It was our first time sleeping in a canyon and the structure offered all the amenities to experience that in a comfortable way, especially with the colder temperatures. The location it’s great, easy to reach and perfect to enjoy walks in the wild and stargazing at night. Can’t wait to go back for a longer period of time! Thanks Ranger Ross!
Amazing desert stay
We had a great time! Everything was super tidy and organized. Can’t emphasize enough how remote this listing is, so be prepared with all the supplies you’d normally have car camping and a few exit plans just in case! The stars were AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Thank you rangers for sharing this cabin :)
Solitude and beauty abound
If you are looking for a Quiet place to stay near Petrified Forest National Park ~ this is ideal, but know that you will need a 4x4 high clearance vehicle as the road is not maintained. Its Off Grid yet has some exceptional qualities such as Pellet Stove, Kitchen with mimi Fridge and PropaneStove, Running Water, Flush Toilet and Shower and a Queen Bed. You will need to Bring a few essentials with you such as Drinking Water, Bedding and Food.
Loved it. Off the beaten path but that is what makes it so fun. Had everything we needed to cook. watched a beautiful sunset and then a full moon. Quiet and relaxing. . Look foward to coming again.!
Hands down....amazing place!
My husband and I absolutely loved staying at Ranger Ross's cabin! The Painted Desert has a beauty that is difficult to describe. It was quiet, serene, and the sunsets were amazing. The cabin itself has so many amenities that made our trip feel more like glamping :). You definitely need 4 wheel drive to get to it but my husband's Tacoma handled the road to the cabin with no issues. It is definitely the place to stay if you are visiting the Petrified Forest! Thank you Ranger Ross for such an awesome place!
Cool off grid experience!
Such a beautiful location! The isolation and bumpy drive in takes a little getting used to but it is so worth it. Cabin was warm and had everything I needed, and the hikes were unreal. Would love to come back in the future.
