Near Shenandoah National Park
Within a 60-minute drive from the Rockfish(South).
An active hay field nestled between the river and the railroad.  A great place to enjoy some R and R.  We love to float the James and there is easy access to the river on our property.  A beautiful field as well as some trees for added shade. Fun to hear the trains and the water as you get amazing views of the night sky.Narrow entrance is marked with a sign, James River Trail. Drive over the tracks and through the hayfield to find your slice of wooded, riverfront camping.  All sites are primitive with one shared portable toilet.   All sites have a picnic table and fire pit with a grate. There are two active railroad lines; one on each side of the river. They do run through the day and night and are obligated to whistle when approaching our crossing.  I have my camp listed as dispersed but all 5 sites are labeled: I treat it first come, first choice.  All sites are on the river! I can't accept or allow RV's or trailers. Zoning restrictions-sorry. Firewood is available at $10 per wagon load.   We are very close to the Jefferson National Forest where you can find great hikes like the Belfast trail fondly called Devil's Marbleyard. We are also just a few miles from the Natural Bridge State Park.

James River Depot
Very nice spot on the James River. The directions were easy to follow, and the sites are spread out nicely. Just a heads up, the trains run on both sides of the river and blows the horn, it's not too obnoxious, but it does happen through the night. We thought the sound of the train going by was relaxing, but some may disagree.

Spectacular stay at the Depot! We loved hearing the trains all day and night (some people might not like that) but we loved it! The river next to the site was calming and beautiful and boasted wildlife all day and night. Easily one of if not the best site we have visited! Highly recommend!

Will be back!
Great spot! The sites were very clean and far apart enough that we didn’t feel on top of our neighbors, who were all very quiet and respectful. The port-a-potty was the cleanest I’ve ever visited! The sites were very flat, so good for tents and truck-bed campers. Overall, wonderful spot on the river. Even with the train, we plan on staying here on our way back south.

"First come first served" isn't ide
First come first serve policy meant no designated camp site. When the group checking out didn't pack up their site until 530pm on the day I arrived (noon check in) I was left to setup camp by the river access, thinking it was a campsite (fire ring, picnic table). Every campsite was occupied when I arrived so I figured, that must be my site. Would be much better to reserve actual site numbers so that you can call if someone is in your site. Impossible to do that when you don't know what site is yours. Ended up wasting the majority of my first day and night setting up then moving my campsite when I saw the family leave site #1 at almost 6pm on the day I checked in. Probably won't return unless I get a free night or some kind of guarantee that I'll be able to use the site for the full time I paid for.

Just go ahead and book it!
James River Depot was amazing!! Highly recommend. Campsite was well maintained, firewood access with a very fair price, spaced out enough for privacy and the river access was perfect. Very close to lots of hiking trails and the natural bridge. The train does train things throughout the night but that didn’t bother us but something to note. Lots of local businesses around if you want to be out and about, a huge field to run with your dog in and cozy campsites for settling down for the day. Couldn’t ask for a better set up. If you’ve been thinking about booking just go for it!

We stayed at site 4. It was a beautiful location! Lots of birds & easy access to river where we could wade in! Firewood was appreciated, though not super seasoned, so we had a smoky fire. Porta potty was clean! Several picnic tables were a nice bonus. The sites were not as private as I expected. We could see both groups next to us (though maybe less visible when greenery fills in) & hear one group pretty well. Sites 2 & 3 had a direct line of sight to one another. We’ll definitely be back, though know what to expect better now!
