Narrow entrance is marked with a brown pole. Drive over the tracks and through the hay field to find your slice of wooded, river front camping.  All sites are primitive with one shared portable toilet.   All sites have picnic table and fire pit with a grate. There are two active railroad lines; one on each side of the river. They do run through the day and night and are obligated to whistle when approaching our crossing.  I have my camp listed as dispersed but all 5 sites are marked.  I consider it first come, first choice.  I can't accept or allow RV's or trailers. Zoning restrictions-sorry. Split firewood is available at $10 per wagon load.  You can also split your own and make a cash donation in the donation box at the wood pile.

The location is beautiful! It's right on the James River with the campsites tucked into the woods. We went for two nights and found it very peaceful. There are train tracks around the property (not in the way), but the trains only came by twice each day for us, and not at a late hour to disturb our sleep. There is also an outhouse that is well-maintained.

We chose this site not only for the beauty but for the convenient location for our hikes in James River Face Wilderness. I'd absolutely camp here again. So much more to see!

One of the best places this group of old men has ever camped. Little not to love, except, perhaps, the trains in the wee hours of the morning, but even that was not all bad. We took full advantage of the firewood available even though we started with 11 bundles of our own (we like camp fires). We had the place to ourselves but with the spacing of the sites I doubt other campers would have been an issue.

Best compliment I think I can give is it reminded us of a spot we had along the Colorado river a few years back. Only missing a bear along the railroad tracks of the other side of the river.

Great spot to camp! As the description says, there is an active railroad on either side of the sites but I only heard one go by after about 11:30. I camped in a rooftop tent and a few sites were too tight to fit my truck into.

This was such a great place to stay, with firewood on site, well taken care of campgrounds and tables. Waking up and watching the sunrise in front of a brisk river was perfect.

Absolutely stellar campsite! One of the nicest tenting experiences I’ve had so far. The site that we chose, #5, was well equipped with everything we needed: a picnic table, a bench, a fire pit (with low and high grates), and even a portable grill! We were the only ones camping that weekend, so we got to look at each of the different sites, and #5 was the only one with a grill, but the rest were also really nice with their own fire pits, grates, tables, and benches. There are two incredibly clean porta-potties a short walk from the sites and even a chopping stump with an axe to chop your own wood! ($10 per wheelbarrow) The river is in an ideal spot right next to the campsites, so you can hear the gentle ripples of the rapids. Yes, you will hear trains throughout your time there, since you’re sandwiched between two railroads, but we planned ahead, brought earplugs, and were able to sleep comfortably through the sound. The directions Wendy provided were easy to follow, as well. We had an amazing time and can’t wait to go back again!

Amazing, riverfront camping! It was perfectly secluded. The field was a great spot to stargaze! Wendy was quick to respond to questions! Definitely recommend staying here!

Very nice spot. Had a fire ring, picnic table and portable toilets. Host checked to see if we needed anything and responded promptly to inquiries. Only down side was train tracks nearby and a train went thru twice during the night blowing it’s whistle.

Gregg, Thank you for leaving the place so tidy. We always appreciate that. The train has to blow the whistle because of the crossing. I think with time the locals tune it out. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.
