About the property

Arcadia is the name we gave to our 83 acre mountainside retreat center for Earth-Based Spirituality. It’s nestled on the southeastern slope of 4000-foot Mount Pleasant in Central Virginia, convenient to I81. (Note, there is a town called Arcadia off I81, but that is not us. Not to confuse.)

We have a mountain creek with waterfalls, towering Beech and Sycamore trees, Witch Hazels leaning over the water, trout, crayfish, snakes, salamanders, and all the rest. Our property backs onto the George Washington National Forest and offers 2000 feet of vertical mountainside with trails to explore.

Enjoy biking near your campsite or up on the mountain trails if you are feeling adventurous. There are also bike trails a short car ride away which are both private and public. We live at the base of Mount Pleasant and are happy to offer additional trail suggestions upon request.

In addition to the trails, there are also three large lakes within a short drive: Thrasher's Lake, Stonehouse Lake, and Mill lake. In the surrounding area you can also find wineries, Rainbow Mountain wolf sanctuary, and amazing bird watching.

We offer several sites, including some that are higher up the mountain if you prefer more isolated camping. Just note that they are more of a trek to the bathrooms, showers, and fresh water.

During your stay, you may encounter free roaming chickens, turkeys, ducks, and guinea fowl. Additionally, one dog, eight cats, and several humans are blessed to call this home.

Finally, we are proud to offer one of the finest private stages on the East Coast with a top-notch sound system and a natural amphitheater which is like a single pie wedge of a stadium.  During the summer months, there are musical events and other extra activities which you will be welcome to join in.

About the listing

Flat gravelled area with an electric hookup if required. Camp along the forest and mountains while you cozy up to the fire pit and share meals with everyone on the picnic table at this tent camping getaway.

Hot and cold running water showers are available, including shampoo. Other necessities can be purchased for a small fee.

We also offer firewood, jams, eggs, breakfast, and energy healing, all of which are available upon checkout as Hipcamp Extras.

We don’t have any cooking supplies, but clean, safe drinking water is available from our well.

We are very dog-friendly. Up to two well-behaved, quiet dogs are allowed, but please do not leave them unattended at any time. Persistent barkers (barking for more than 20 minutes or complaints from other campers) will be given two warnings before they and their people are asked to leave. If it is felt that the dog is being unattended the owner's reserve the right to intervene. Pet sitting may be provided upon request.

The Host will greet you upon arrival and then leave you to enjoy your stay, but we are also happy to interact as campers wish.

While you will have privacy at your site, we do have a few different campsites on the property, so you may run into other campers in common areas or in passing during your stay.

Additional details to note:

  • Cellular service is limited for some carriers, so plan ahead accordingly.
  • While we recommend disconnecting from the digital world during your visit, we do offer limited WiFi for campers upon request.

I stayed 2 nights at Fran's sanctuary and it was a wonderful experience. I ended up staying on a flat gravel site right in front of the stage (as it is currently not being used), which worked out great for car camping. The site included a 20 amp electric hookup, just bring an extension cord. Toilets and shower cabins were conveniently close by and very clean. I was greeted in the morning by a curious group of guinea fowl, and there are ducks and chickens roaming the property as well. Other than the peaceful clucking the place is very quiet. Close to multiple hikes in the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as wineries and breweries. Fran was a top host and very responsive to my inquiries. I highly recommend this site and would definitely visit again!

Area close to the property (within a 10 min drive).Guinea fowl roaming the property next to the stage.View from the front of the stage toward the main house; toilets and shower cabins are located on the lower level (accessible from outside).
