WINTER STAYS      PET FRIENDLY

The cottage is absolutely stunning in winter. It is so peaceful, cozy, and relaxing. There is an ATV trail nearby that you can snowshoe on, or if you prefer, you can make your own. There is lots of wildlife to see and seeing deer pass by is not unusual.

Please think of it as similar to winter camping…just a bit more comfortable. Here are some things to keep in mind to make the best of your stay:

  • The cottage is winterized, but even with a fire, it will be very cold if the temperature outside is below -10ºC.
  • In the event of severe snowfall or if the temperature drops below -15ºC, please contact me to cancel and receive a refund.
  • You will have to hike about 200 m into the cottage because it is not plowed. There is a small hill to climb. You will need to wear snowshoes or skis for this.
  • The entrance for the front door may not be shoveled. A shovel will be provided so that you can shovel your way in!
  • Please bring your own drinking water. I recommend bringing a sled to drag your supplies.
  • There will be some water in the cottage for washing, but it may be frozen when you arrive.
  • There is a wood stove. One stack of firewood will be provided. Please be conservative when using the wood and do not let the stove thermometer go the “red zone.”
  • You can purchase additional firewood for $20 per bundle (large). Please let me know ahead of time if you think you would like some and we can arrange payment. You can also purchase wood at the nearby store.
  • Blankets are provided, but a thermal sleeping bag is recommended.
  • There are mice in the cottage during the winter! Please make sure all your food is secured at night and everything is cleaned up before you leave.

Private, cozy, rustic, off-grid cabin nestled in the forest in Thorne, Quebec. Great spot for taking it easy, reading books, fires, bird watching, listening to music, walking in the woods, snowshoeing in winter. In summer, you can hear the whip-poor-will's sing and coyotes howl! In winter, you'll find all kinds of tracks and there are lots of deer. Gorgeous swimming in Lac McCuaig about a 10 min drive away. Wood stove for cold nights.

There are a couple of cottages nearby, but they are fairly quiet and they can't see you. Permaculture gardens onsite, lots of books on homesteading and herbs. The cottage is rustic but comfortable. It is off-grid, but there is solar for lights and the fridge as well as a propane stove, fire pit, wood stove, and outhouse. Four large jugs of water are supplied. Dishes, dog bowls, sheets, toilet paper, and towels supplied. There is cell coverage, but no Wi-Fi.

Additional camping available anywhere on the property. There is one double bed and a mattress that can be made up for extra guests.

The nearby town Ladysmith is originally a German/Polish settlement where you can find a corner store for all your basics and the atmospheric Ladysmith Hotel where you can grab a bite to eat. The Ladysmith Flea Market (when open) should not be missed!

If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing, and rustic experience, this place is for you!
