30 acres hosted by Katie T.
Gray and Katie Turner established Baken Creek Farm in 2018 and have since worked to develop the 30-acre property into a thriving farm with sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, and vegetable gardens. We’re excited to open our property to HipCampers!
Learn more about this land:
We operate an active, organically-managed permaculture farm in Perry County, PA that includes sheep, chickens, pigs, cows, and a vegetable garden.
Hipcamp proceeds will go towards the purchase of trees to continue to grow our farm vision! We plant as many trees as we can during the spring and fall--generally a few hundred each season.
Perry County is rural with minimal light pollution. At dusk, you can spot bats darting through the air. You may hear the hoot of an owl or the cry of a fox or perhaps nothing more than the wisp of the wind through the leaves. As day breaks, roosters will greet the sunrise, fog may have formed over the pond and the rolling Appalachian hills will come alive with the chatter of songbirds, woodpeckers, or squirrels chirping at their new-found forest friends.
Our pond is home to largemouth bass, some weighing in about 5-pounds and measuring two feet casting ripples across the surface as if to taunt the curious fishing folk. For the lighthearted fishing folk, there are pan fish dancing along the shorelines nipping at bugs on the water's surface. At its depth, the pond reaches about 8 feet with gentle sloping to the outer edges and includes a shallow wading pool area for young children.
Farm activities are centralized around the barn and market garden area providing complete privacy to our Site 1 campsite. A short walk from the campsite will allow you to experience the farm atmosphere, especially Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during our open farm store hours or special on-farm events. We do move our livestock around the farm regularly. The sheep or chickens may be in close proximity to the campsites during your stay with 2-3 visits per day from the farmers to check on animals and perform necessary farm tasks (morning and evening). We manage our farm organically and regeneratively--there are no overburdening 'farm smells' here. Baken Creek Farm seeks a symbiotic relationship between food production and the protection of our natural environment is of utmost importance.
Pond View site (Site #1) overlooks our half-acre pond and has a gorgeous view of Blue Mountain and the Audubon Society's Waggoners Gap Hawk Watch (10 minutes drive). There is some road noise, although it's minimal at night. This location is also about 250 feet from the nearest neighbor (with some trees in between), so we ask that you keep the volume down after 10 PM. The ground is not perfectly level, but suitable for tents. You have the option of pitching your tent among the trees or in the open field. The campsite is a short walk up the hill, just beyond the pond.
Our RV site is suitable for smaller RVs and campers and is located in the middle of our farm. There is less privacy during they day while we complete farm chores, but it is private at night. You can park so that you have a view of our market garden and barns rather than the main road.
We have a picnic table and fire pit with one bundle of firewood included per night at your site. Additional firewood is available for purchase or dead limbs/sticks may be gathered.
Tours are available for an additional fee. Farm products (i.e. chicken, lamb, eggs, honey, maple syrup, locally-roasted coffee, veggies, herbs) can be purchased anytime and change seasonally.
Our farm is located about 20 minutes north of Carlisle, which provides great dining options or New Bloomfield/Newport for local farm-to-table fare. We are surrounded by farmland and forests, with three state parks just a short drive away (Little Buffalo, Colonel Dennings, and Fowlers Hollow). Perry County has several historical sites (including many covered bridges), coffee shops and restaurants, and farm stands with plenty of gorgeous views and photo opportunities. (Note that shops and restaurants in Perry County are generally closed on Sundays). We'd be happy to give you pointers!
