The sunset was magical, the bus was awesome- our only regret was not having more time to stay and explore the area.

Shanti Community is a wonderful place to unwind, and open to the beauty of the New Mexico skies. When sleep comes a callin’ retire in time into your own vintage bus from yesteryear. Add your own memory to the logbook and read the stories of those who have come before you. In the morning, grab a patch of shade, kick back and soak it all in, in a different light. Your coffee never tasted so good! I’ve stayed in two of the busses now, two years in a row and will surely be back to try the others. This place is a must.

We got there in the dark and it was challenging to get there. Sleeping in a bus was cool.

What a great experience staying here! The bus was so cool, and the community was sweet. The kind hosts texted in the morning to invite us to yoga, but do to lack of cell service I didn't see it until too late. The town of Madrid nearby was really cool too, with art and chocolate and awesome locals! Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a unique experience :)

Amazing get away. Took my 7yr old son and had an amazing time. The bus was suprisingly clean amd kept us safe in the 25 mph winds. The grouds were clean and the directions were clear. Slow and steady on the road, very bumpy. Had dinner at the Mine Shaft in Madrid. Great trip!

Bare bone bohemian

Honestly, my partner and I felt a bit disappointed that we ended up paying so much for what was actually a very bare bones setup. The composting toilet was perfectly adequate and a good looking example of one, the solar shower is exactly that - a plastic bag in a stall that heats up water in the sun - and the very-dimly lit community kitchen is more of a two-walled lean-to with a five gallon water dispenser instead of a faucet and the stove is a Coleman type two burner camp stove. There is also a picnic bench.

Granted, we mistakenly made our reservation for the night AFTER we actually arrived, and when we hunted down the hosts they were kind enough to let us sleep in our van on the edge of the property anyways and use the facilities which was accommodating and very nice of them. Overall, I’d say if you’re driving by, this is a fine stop, but not worth a detour unless you’re really itching to sleep in an old bus and get a glimpse of the thriving local bohemian hipster culture.
