The Hermitory is a single efficiency with futon, sink, rain-water catchment, outhouse, wood-stove and trombe wall located separately from our farm.  It has a deck overlooking the canyon. due to its solar design it stays warm even in winter. Please expect to bring own bedding and cooking materials [though we can provide these if necessary]. There is electricity, as well as ice for coolers. If you have  no cell phone/internet service [most carriers cover this area] we can provide basic wifi.  Firewood can be purchased, or better even gather it yourself very close by. It is possible to obtain organic greens, eggs and other foods from our farm. Friendly pets ok. Located on 10 acres of mountain desert. 1-5 miles away from river, lake, and hot springs. As internet service is spotty, please call if possible to confirm booking. Listed as drive in, be prepared to walk your supplies from driveway to back building [150 feet].

Hiking trails start right at the front door, and the  chama river canyon wilderness [bordering the santa fe and carson national forest] is only a short walk away. i can provide canoes, bikes, backpacks and other gear, also a shuttle service if you want to raft the Rio Chama.

please note that our organic farm is entirely off the grid, so electricity and hot water depend somewhat on the weather. there is always enough electricity  to charge phones or laptops, have lights and music, but maybe arc-weld that sculpture somewhere else if it is cloudy?  those interested in going to the hot springs might want to call me for details before their visit since access depends on weather conditions and seasons.

please do not attempt to drive here without directions, which i will email as an attachment

Covid - protocol: i disinfect between visitors.  and you will bring your own bedding. i have been vaccinated so i am relaxed about masks but will gladly wear one if it matters to you. please also bring your own toilet paper, i can't disinfect a started roll properly. thanks.

This place is an amazing spot with sweeping views from the hut and an epic adventure attached to it. Arvo is a great host and a wealth of knowledge. He has set himself up with a sweet corner of the world living self sufficiently and with the knowledge of his surroundings as his abundance. He shares his garden freely. Make sure you bring some extra cash so you can purchase wood or other fine foods he has created. We came on Thanksgiving and brought all our camping gear plus the kitchen sink so where more than comfortable. I suggest bringing all the goods you would with you as a camper and enjoy the spot.

I was looking for a last-minute retreat and the Hermitory was perfect. Arvo is a great host--kind and very thorough with directions and recommendations. The space is well-intentioned with all the necessities, and the bed was super comfy! This was a wonderful place for reading, hiking, making good food (grapes, greens, herbs, eggs all from Arvo!), and resting. I would stay again.

Staying at Arvo’s place was amazing. .
Arvo has an unusually wild and beautiful place, which he has built by hand. Nothing is ordinary. Be ready to open your mind to another way of life. Arvo grows lots of grapes and greens in his greenhouse and generously offers them to visitors. He is is also very helpful in showing where to go on great hikes in the extraordinarily beautiful land around his place. And he likes to introduce you to his pet Raven and various other animals in his home. It was truly a wonderful experience and I wish I could have stayed longer.

I had such a restful three nights at the Hermitory! Arvo is a very generous and knowledgeable host... he shared his honey osha mead and some fresh strawberries with me. The views, the birds, the sweet pets, the solitude... I would definitely return. Sadly, I didn't make it out to the hot spring, but maybe next time. The Hermitory got quite warm through out the day (and you want to keep the doors closed to preserve the heat), so it was nice to hang out on the deck, but make sure to bring sun screen/ sun hats. The afternoon sun can be intense, even with a breeze.

Arvo's place is great. It was nice to get away and disconnect for a few days. His fresh grapes were amazing and my pup really enjoyed playing with his pup. We even got to meet Chaco! If you're booking for the springs, do note they aren't on his property and do require some hiking to reach. Hope to return again someday!

Very unique place to stay. Host shared lots of veggies from his garden and showed me a good spot to go fly fishing. A great self built homestead.

What a unique property! I really loved the Hermitory. Directions to get there were detailed and Arvo gave us a tour of all the amenities when we arrived. It has a beautiful view from the deck and stays warm at night from the insulated walls. Would stay again!
