the apartment lies within a large glass greenhouse, so there is more space with two couches and a table. you can help yourself to greens and - seasonally - grapes from the 3 grapevines which provide shade in the summer. i also provide filtered water at no charge, and you can buy chicken, duck-or goose eggs and other farm products. right outside the door you can start hiking and exploring, there is public land all around it - not least of which is the rio chama wilderness, a 20-some mile stretch of uninhabited river canyon with hot springs and great fishing. hike to lakes, mountains, forests, and all this without any crowds. when i go to the hot springs i am usually the only person there [outside the rafting season, that is]. we do provide shuttle service if you want to go rafting - we can provide canoes [as well as tents, backpacks, bikes, fishing gear and more].
if you'd like to see lots more photos, or over 60 reviews of my farm and the surrounding wilderness, go to my 'Hermitory' listing and scroll down.

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Arvo is excellent at living in harmony with plants and animals. “Living sustainably” is something he’ll be able to do into his nineties most likely. Great example of off-grid living with minimal negative impact on a very beautiful area if that is your interest.
Magical spot in gorgeous country
Arvo's place is absolutely magical and we had a great stay. Highly recommend. Our "living room" was a greenhouse full of ripe grapes. Beautiful walking right from the front door, and Lightning Point, a spot on the canyon rim that Arvo recommended visiting, was epically gorgeous. Arvo was warm and welcoming, showed my daughter where she could pick strawberries, he's a lovely person. This is a very eccentric spot, and it's not going to be your thing if you can't handle some dust and mess and a few dead cars in the front yard. Definitely funky NM off-grid living. But if you're game for that, it's very special. We hope to come back.
Words can’t adequately describe the beauty of the wilderness surrounding this home. The owner, Arvo, is a beautiful soul that has such a strong love for this land. He lives off the grid with a garden, solar power, wind turbines, and careful use of rainwater. All of these things he shared freely with us while my family and I were there. I will never our experience here!
Like a greenhouse on the moon
This place is otherworldly! The sound of the wind turbines almost makes you feel like you're on the moon. The sunsets are incredible. And the apartment is very cozy and has everything you need. Best of all, there are sweet, friendly animals running around and delicious greens you can pick from for your meals.
Quintessential n nm off grid life.
Arvo's place is a Quintessential 100+% Northern New Mexico off grid experience. Arvo has much wisdom to share with a quirky humor developed over decades of living 100% self-sufficiently. Soak in the knowledge or just relax in the overwhelming natural beauty that sorrounds the area. Hike to natural hot springs or bask in the beauty of Brazos type canyons. Extreme nature (silent, pitch black nights, except for the endless canopy of stars) but still minutes from "town." Extreme off grid (with running water and flushing toilet!)
A sweet wild little getaway
Thanks to Arvo this little high desert nook is beaming with an abundance of edible greens, bustling animals friends and sustainable energy flow. If you have a good sense of direction you can find all kinds of special waters stemming from the great chama river 💧
Arvo’s place is completely amazing. It’s my best Hipcamp experience yet! Arvo is so friendly and welcoming. He showed us his whole farm, let us use so much of it and shared gifts, shared a meal with us, showed us a one hour old lamb kid that was born just before we got there! And more. The area around his farm is beautiful- hot springs and hikes and mountains all around. If Arvo recommends you do a hike- trust me and just do it! Connected to the grapeartment is a large greenhouse (with a HUGE series of grapevines overhead) with seating and couches and veggies growing we sat in which was lovely in the rain. A beautiful place to disconnect, read, cook, and with good company too. Hot shower, awesome little kitchen, ducks, goats, a sweet dog and cats, all the animal friends we could want. Our dog felt very at home too. Thanks Arvo we will be back
