You get to sleep in a tipi.
Very private area.
The stars were amazing.
The wood stove doesnt have a damper and the tipi has absolutely no insulation. We FILLED the wood stove and it still burned through every 2 hours, so it was cold (40⁰) and we were up every 2 hours to try and keep warm. Ive never had this happen with any of the past wood stoves I've used, I'm not sure how you would be able to sleep here in winter.
The site lists a shower and bathroom but we didnt get any instruction on where to find these and didnt see anything when we looked around the property... but we also never asked.
Terrible experience. stay away.
I'd like to review the campsite, but when we showed up at the site, another party was already there. These people lied to us and claimed that they had booked the tipi and we must have the wrong place (we didn't). We believed them though since I've never experienced someone stealing a campsite, it didn't seem a likely possibility. There are two tipis and they had booked the other one, which is basically a barebones tent. I guess they didnt like it and figured they can take our site. While this alone is not the hosts fault, what is the host's fault is a complete failure to resolve the issue while we were there.
We of course tried to find the host Justin. We went all over the property and looked everywhere to make sure that we didn't have the wrong site. Later on after talking to Justin I realized he lied to me as well. Justin claimed two things; that he was in his barn at the time of our arrival. (he was not, we were yelling 'hello' looking for him for about half an hour at the barn). Simultaneously he claimed that he was running an errand to Portland. He said he had a black van - funny enough, we saw a black van leaving when we were arriving. What a coincidence! So then you might think we'd try to text or call him. After wandering around for a while we found service and texted him, hoping for some assistance. We did not hear back from Justin until the NEXT DAY. So we had to drive 5hrs back to my buddy's place since there is nothing in the area, good luck trying to find anywhere else to stay on short notice. To Justin's credit he did offer a refund and a discount on a next visit right away but frankly I wouldn't return if you paid me.
The tipi itself looked awesome except for the other people occupying it, who spoiled the view. Surely it would have been a good experience if they didn't steal our site. But keep in mind that if someone does steal your site or you need help in any way, you're on your own. In good conscience I cannot recommend Toad Hill in its entirety to anybody.
Peaceful and remote
The tipi is a great location for hiking as it is next to a lot of trails. It provided shelter from the rain and heated nicely with the wood stove. It also kept the bugs out better than I thought it would. We really enjoyed our stay and it felt very remote, which is exactly what we wanted.
Wonderful winter weekend
The teepee with the wood stove was awesome!! Had a warm dry place to hang out, play some cards and listen to some great tunes. It started raining overnight and continued all the next day. There were a few drip spots because of a small hole created by recent powerful wind storms but apparently this teepee is being replaced in just a short bit. It was great having chairs to sit on and air mattresses to use, all provided by either Justin or left behind by previous campers. Justin was exceptional by hauling our sled filled with gear in and back out for us. We will definitely be back, next trip is the traditional teepee.
Awesome winter getaway
My partner and I had the best time staying at the Tipi. We went late January, so it was -2 degrees the first night - but with the right gear and a fire going in the wood stove, it was a great stay! The second night the temp dropped to about -7. Justin, the host, was super cool and flexible and let us stay in the bus the second night. The bus was awesome with a retro, 70s vibe - and is also pretty cozy once you get the wood stove going. Highly recommend for fans of winter camping, and we're looking forward to coming back in the warmer weather!
Justin was extremely accommodating. We switched back-and-forth our dates a couple of times and he was willing to find us a place no matter what. We did book We did book for TIpi. We arrived after dark, The drive up there was exciting! Unfortunately our tipi was taken. We did get a hold of Justin. He had both the hippie bus and wooden floor tent open. FYI the wooden floor stilt tent Is approx 300 square ft from parking. We had a great adventure finding everything at night but this was our fault! We lit a fire and had a very peaceful private sleep! Waterfall is 20 minutes away!
